The Lee University women's basketball team edged a longtime NAIA nemesis, Union University, 68-66 in an NCAA Division II matchup Monday in Jackson, Tenn., but Union defeated the Lee men 69-66 with a 41-34 second half in the Gulf South Conference doubleheader. Jenna Adams had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Lee's Lady Flames, including the go-ahead three-point play with five seconds left, following her rebound of a Karley Miller putback try of an Adams miss. Hollie German and Kayla Beavers scored 16 and 14 points, Beavers with 4-of-4 3-point shooting in 17 minutes off the bench, and Rachel Lockhart had eight rebounds with nine points for Lee (7-3, 3-1). Astrid Huttemann scored 18 points on 6-of-13 3-point shooting for Union (8-2, 3-1). "Union is a great team and they have the best coach in the league," Lady Flames coach Marty Rowe said in a Lee release. "We're very similar to them in style and play, and we got a big victory tonight. Winning the battle of the boards (37-26) was huge for us." Jamal Worthington and Tyquan Roberts off the bench led the Flames (6-4, 2-2) with 14 and 13 points, and Corey Billingsley paced the starters with 12. Ashanti Day had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Corieon Pearson and Roy Bullock each scored 15 points for Union (6-4, 2-2).

• Five Dalton State basketball players scored in double figures Monday evening as the Roadrunners improved to 17-1 with a 75-69 win over visiting Spring Hill College at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center. Canadian Tyrel Edwards, a 6-foot-5 forward, made his Dalton State debut and scored 16 points off the bench with 3-of-6 3-point shooting. Sean Tate had 15 points and eight assists and Ricky Sears, Erich Allen and Preston Earle tallied 10 points apiece for the Roadrunners. Frederick Gatson had 20 points and 13 rebounds for Spring Hill (1-11), and Robert Gipson added 14 points. DSC's scheduled game Wednesday night at Carver Bible in Atlanta has been changed to Saturday at 4 p.m.

• The Hiwassee men's basketball game scheduled for Monday night at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn., was called off because of the inclement weather. No makeup date was announced.

• Carson-Newman's Ish Sanders from Cleveland High School broke out of a recent slump by scoring a game-high 25 points in the Eagles' 80-72 win Saturday at Wingate (8-2), which lost for the first time in six South Atlantic Conference games this season. Sanders, who made 13 of 14 free throws, also had four assists for the Eagles (7-3, 4-2).

• The University of Tennessee's athletes had a cumulative grade point average exceeding 3.0 for the 2013 fall semester for the first time since 2003, when the athletic department began recording the all-sport GPAs. The overall figure was 3.02, led by women's tennis at 3.54, rowing at 3.35 and both golf teams at 3.34.
