Big Five: TVA's peak power demand days

Today's cold weather is pushing up power consumption as electric furnaces run more to cope with the cold. But TVA's highest power peaks have come in August 2007 when soaring temperatures boosted air conditioning use. TVA's all-time peak power demands came in:

• 1. Aug. 16, 2007, 33,482 megawatts when temperatures when the average daily high was 102 degrees

• 2. Aug. 22, 2007, 33,445 megawatts when the average daily high was 100 degrees

• 3. Aug. 8, 2007, 33,315 megawatts when the average daily high was 98 degrees

• 4. Aug.15, 2007, 33,304 megawatts when the average daily high was 102 degrees

• 5. Aug. 9, 2007, 33,173 megawatts when the average daily high was 99 degrees
