The Chattanooga Fire Department sent five companies to contain a blaze located at 2908 Fifth Ave. early Tuesday morning, with temperatures in the single digits.

Trois Johnson, 67, said he was awoken at about 2 a.m. by the sound of "popping." Johnson said that when he opened his bedroom door, he encounted smoke and heat, and had to crawl on his hands and knees to escape through a side door.

Although the fire was contained to about two rooms, the rest of the house was subject to smoke and water damage. The total loss was estimated at $50,000.

Johnson was transported to Parkridge Medical Center by Hamilton County EMS for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire Investigation Division.
