Volkswagen's top official confirmed tonight that the automaker will make a midsize SUV for the American market.

Speaking at the North American International Auto Show, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, VW CEO, announced a multibillion-dollar investment program in North America over the next five years and added, "Volkswagen's midsize SUV for America is on its way!"

Winterkorn didn't say whether the SUV would be manufactured at the Chattanooga assembly plant or in Mexico.

The CEO also reaffirmed the goal to sell 1 million vehicles from the Volkswagen and Audi brands per year in the U.S. by 2018.
