Chattanooga race car driver Ronnie Johnson was the 2013 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Lade Model Series national champion, and he is going into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame. Johnson will be honored Saturday night at the annual awards banquet at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Thunder Road Museum in Dawsonville, Ga., where he will receive a check for $20,000. His car will be on display all week at the Dawsonville town square. Johnson is a 40-year veteran of dirt-track racing and a two-time Southern All-Star Series champion and a two-time winner of the Dirt Track World Championship race. The "Chattanooga Flash" won three races and had 15 top-five finishes and another five top-10s in the Cartersville, Ga.-based NeSmith series last year, and he earned $43,110 in his No. 5 Chevrolet Special in 2013. He has a series-best 17 career wins.
Basketball
• The Sewanee basketball teams split against visiting Millsaps in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Sewanee men's 64-50 win stretched their home winning streak to 12 games, as a balanced Tigers attack jumped out early to take a 35-24 lead at the half and cruise to the victory. Keshonn Carter, Jorden Williams and Will Downey each scored 13 to lead Sewanee and Carter pulled down nine rebounds in teh win. Millsaps' Tully Gilligan led all scorers with 17 points. In the women's game, Millsaps held Sewanee to just 12 points in the first half to build a 19-point lead at the break on the way to an easy win. Sewanee was led by Jamie Chauvin with six points in the loss.
• Freshman Erika Woodfin from Dade County scored 23 points with four 3-point baskets and April Besley from Dalton grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds as Reinhardt University beat Truett-McConnell in Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball Saturday at Waleska, Ga. Rhande Haskett from Ridgeland led the visiting Bears (7-6, 5-4) with 14 points, and Helen Simoes from Hamilton Heights added 12. Reinhardt is 7-9, 4-5 in the AAC.
Cycling
• Soddy-Daisy's Megan Rogers was one of four King University students, and one of two local cyclists, competing at the USA Cycling Collegiate Cyclocross Championships last weekend in Boulder, Colo. Rogers, and her teammate Kaysee Armstrong of Knoxville both suffered early crashes in the women's Division 2 race but were able to complete the race. Armstrong rallied to finish sixth, while Armstrong came ended the race a lap down in 18th. In the men's competition, King cyclist Andrew Bailey finished fifth in the D-2 race, while his teammate Blake Adams was unable to finish. In the mixed team relay, King University earned a podium spot with a third place showing. In addition to the King contingent, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Robert Berghel was 31st in the men's D2 race, at one lap down.
