Another set of Learn to Row classes begins Monday at the William G. Raoul Rowing Center, and spots remain.

"Our May and June classes were packed," Diane Moore said Wednesday. "We can take no more than 12, but we still can take a few more for the course that starts Monday, and we'll have one starting in August also."

Moore is the contact person for the Lookout Rowing Club, which conducts the 10-session classes and counts some of the $200 course fee toward membership and years of rowing enjoyment. Anyone interested can contact her at Dcm7167@gmail.com or 718-8685.

Anders Swanson is the head coach for the club and the classes, which run Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. for two weeks. A two-time All-Ivy rower at Princeton University, where he graduated in 2005, and the son of longtime McCallie School coach Dick Swanson, Anders also is the rowing coach for Girls Preparatory School.

Moore said Swanson and other club members continue to help class members individually after the basic course, which mostly draws true novices.

"Most of the time we have total beginners," she said, "but sometimes we have people who maybe started in high school or college but have been away from it."

Equipment for the course is provided by the club, but participants need to be able to swim. Getting wet is one of the byproducts of the lessons.

"Once you learn the basics, you can still progress," Moore said. "And you meet other people who like to row."

The rowing center is accessible off Riverside Drive near the Boathouse restaurant.
