Champions women are team champions

Maddi Everts, Kilbrey Fowler, Patty Donnahoo and Joan Rose from the Champions Club at Hampton Creek combined to shoot a 3-under-par 69 and win the Chattanooga Women's City Team Championship on Tuesday at Council Fire. The Council Fire team of Phyllis Loftsgard, Wanda Smith, Teresa Van Arsdale and Kandy Berke won the B Division with a 73, and Council Fire's Susan Kaplan, Becky Blaesing, Michelle Rauch and Lynn McGee won the C Division with a 76. The women's city individual tournament will be next week.


Burris leads state

St. Andrew's-Sewanee golfer Jenna Burris from Manchester led the 34 who finished the first round of the Tennessee Girls' Junior Championship at Sevierville Golf Club on Tuesday; 30 had their round suspended. Burris shot a 2-over 73 at the Highlands Course and has a one-shot lead over Elizabeth England of Oakland, Tenn. Baylor golfer Katherine Holmes is tied for ninth at 80.


CCS duo in hunt

Chattanooga Christian teammates Scott Stevens and Lake Johnson are in a group of 11 tied for eighth place after the first round of the Tennessee Junior Amateur Championship at Sevierville Golf Club. Stevens' 3-over 75 included a hole-in-one on the fourth hole. Tanner Owens of Milton took the lead at 68, one ahead of Maryville's Jake Headrick and Bartlett's Clayton Gregory.


George in Women's Am

Former Walker Valley golfer Avery George placed third in a U.S. Women's Amateur qualifier Tuesday at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Ga., and advanced to the national tournament. George, who plays for Mercer University, shot a 1-under 71 to advance from the Georgia qualifier. UTC golfers Jordan Britt, Emily McLennan and Sarah Dolmovich also were in the field.


DCP volunteers sought

The Tennessee Golf Foundation is seeking volunteers to help with a July 26 qualifying tournament for the Drive, Chip & Putt national competition that concludes at Augusta National Golf Club. The qualifier for ages 7-15 will be held at the First Tee of Chattanooga Player Development Complex beginning at 8:30 that Saturday morning, and about 200 participants are expected. Area aces

Susan Kaplan scored a hole-in-one Monday at Council Fire. She aced No. 17 from 120 yards with a 5-rescue and had Nancy Logue as a witness.
