A former Grundy County, Tenn., sheriff's department captain has been indicted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on theft charges after allegedly stealing handguns from the department's evidence room.

At the request of 12th District Attorney General J. Michael Taylor, TBI special agents began investigating Deke Matthew Stone, 33, on Aug. 1 of last year, according to a news release. Agents determined that in June 2013 Stone took three handguns from the department's evidence room. He left his job with the sheriff's department before the TBI case began.

On Monday, the Grundy County Grand Jury returned indictments charging the Altamont, Tenn., man with one count of official misconduct and one count of theft over $1,000. Stone turned himself in to TBI agents today at the Grundy County Jail and was released after posting $7,500 bond.
