Young Democrats meet tonight

The topic for tonight's meeting of the Hamilton County Young Democrats is making get-out-the-vote calls.

Alexander hit on amendment

Joe Carr, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, hit out at his opponent for supporting Amendment 2 on the November ballot.

The proposed constitutional amendment would enshrine the state's current judicial selection process, in which the governor appoints Supreme Court justices. That process is used even though state law calls for elections by voters.

"Amendment 2 is just another power grab by those that think the government is the solution for everything," Carr said in a news release. "The judiciary should be accountable to the people not the Governor."

Democrats support justices

The board of directors for the Hamilton County Democratic Party passed a resolution at its July meeting expressing the "strongest possible" support for the retention of Tennessee Supreme Court Justices Connie Clark, Sharon Lee and Gary Wade.

"By voting to retain the justices, we maintain our independence from the national PACs who are trying to control our courts," Chairman Terry Lee said in a news release. "Justices Clark, Lee and Wade have served with distinction. A vote to retain them is a vote to preserve our Tennessee values. We must not allow outsiders to manipulate our court system."

Dean calls for records update

Vince Dean, the Republican nominee for Hamilton County Criminal Court Clerk, said if elected he would update the clerk's online records system.

He said in a news release that local attorneys want affidavits of complaint, indictments and case motions available online to save time.

"It is time we utilize the available technology, making our Criminal Court Clerk's office, and our courtrooms in turn, more efficient and ultimately more effective," he said in the release.

Fairbanks gets police support

Randy Fairbanks, Republican nominee for Hamilton County Commission District 1, has been endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police Rock City Lodge 22 and the International Brotherhood of Police Officers Local No. 673. Both unions represent police officers and deputies from every police department throughout Hamilton County.

IBPO chapter President Rob Simmons said in a news release that officers "trust his leadership abilities on the issues that matter most to police officers and their families" and believe he will "actively fight to ensure the public safety needs of this community are funded so police officers can better serve local residents and businesses."

Adams releases television ad

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Terry Adams has released his first television ad, "Two Fights," which focuses on fighting for veterans and against what his campaign calls "the tea party's radical agenda in Washington."

Adams is battling Gordon Ball in the primary for the chance to face Republicans Lamar Alexander or Joe Carr in November.

Fleischmann nabs 2 OKs

U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, seeking his third term representing Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District, last week announced endorsements from Christian author and Bible teacher Kay Arthur and the National Rifle Association.

In a news release, Arthur expressed concern for the future of America and added, "We desperately need mature, tested, proven men and women of conviction who fear God more than man that will stand without compromise for biblical principles fighting for us in Washington. We're fortunate to have just that man, which is why I am publicly endorsing Chuck Fleischmann for Congress."

The NRA's Political Victory Fund gave Fleischmann a "A" rating and noted his "steadfast support for the Second Amendment."

2 gun groups back Crangle

Tommy Crangle, seeking the Republican nomination for Tennessee House District 27, has been given top ratings by the National Rifle Association and the highest possible rating by the Tennessee Firearms Association based on candidate surveys.

The NRA's AQ rating reflects that Crangle is a candidate, not an elected office holder.

"I have always been a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment and the NRA has recognized that commitment," Crangle said in a news release. "Voters in District 27 should have little doubt that, as their State Representative, I will stand up for the voters' Constitutional rights in this area."
