Couple hurt in I-75 crash

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - A couple from Knoxville were taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga after a motorcycle crash Saturday.

Cleveland police spokeswoman Evie West said Dale and Karen Dockery, both 48, were traveling south on Interstate 75 when the motorcycle struck a concrete barrier in the construction area at the exit 20 off-ramp.

No information was available on the Dockerys' condition Saturday evening.

Trooper class signups open

NASHVILLE - Applications will open Wednesday and run through Aug. 5 for a new Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper cadet class scheduled to begin Feb. 15, 2015.

Potential candidates must be at least 21 years old, U.S. citizens and have a high school diploma or equivalent and no felony convictions. Two years of college or military or law enforcement experience are preferred. All applicants must apply online through the Tennessee Department of Human Resources at agency.governmentjobs.com/tennessee.

1 dead, 5 hurt in shooting

KNOXVILLE - Authorities say one person was killed and five other people wounded in a shooting about 3 a.m. Saturday in the Cumberland Avenue strip area, known for its bars and nightlife.

Police charged 35-year-old Marquail Patterson, of Knoxville, with one count of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Police said no other suspects were being sought.

Escaped Monroe inmate found

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. - Authorities have captured one of two Monroe County Jail inmates who escaped from a work detail last week.

WVLT-TV reported that Ricky Burnett was taken into custody in Madisonville around 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said Burnett and Tony Joe Carroll were working at a convenience center when they stole an SUV belonging to a site supervisor and drove away.

Burnett had been serving time for driving on a suspended license, manufacture of schedule II drugs, drug paraphernalia and violation of parole. He now faces additional charges of escape and theft of property.

Carroll, serving time for charges of theft, vandalism, auto burglary and destruction of valuable papers, has not been found.
