Project: Hardwood flooring plant expansion.

Location: 210 E. 11th Street, South Pittsburg, Tenn.

Owner: Shaw Industries Inc.

General Contractor: Schaerer Contracting Co. of Chattanooga.

History: The original spun-yarn plant on the site was shut down in 2004, idling 400 employees. The plant reopened as a hardwood flooring production facility in 2006 when Shaw invested $20 million to convert plant into the largest "engineered flooring'" facility of its kind.

Scope of current work: The newest expansion will boost production capacity by at least 60 percent.

Investment: $40 million.

Purpose: Shaw Industries CEO Vance Bell said the expansion "is an important component in our overall hardwood strategy. By investing in this plant and our other hardwood facilities, we are enhancing our ability to offer the widest product mix, the most innovative design, and the greatest quality and service to our customers."

Schedule: Construction began late last year and is scheduled to be completed in late 2014.

Size of expansion: 160,000 square feet.

Plant staffing: The addition will add 25 new jobs to the 200-employee plant.
