Softball

• Catcher Emily Dagnan from Chattanooga State and Sequatchie County High School is among six recruits signed for 2014-15 by Lee University softball coach Emily Russell. Dagnan's signing was reported several months ago, but she has been joined by corner infielder Kaylie Drew from Fallbrook, Calif., and the University of Hawaii-Hilo; infielder NiaRaye Ceasar from Fairfield, Calif., and Mount San Antonio College; outfielder Sarah Merced from Kennesaw, Ga., and North Cobb High School; and Tennesseans Brooke Bailey from Clinton High and Lindsey Watson from Maryville High. Bailey is another catcher and hit .517 this last spring, while outfielder Watson batted .369 and Merced hit .400 and was a Georgia Dugout all-state senior selection. Ceasar was first-team all-conference in her junior college league after batting .508 with 11 home runs, six doubles and 56 RBIs, and Drew was an All PacWest Academic Athlete and hit .396. Dagnan batted .408 with 10 homers and eight doubles for the Lady Tigers team that went to the NJCAA Division I national tournament. "Emily is a tremendous sign for us," Russell said in Wednesday's release. "She is tough behind the plate. She has caught [virtually] all of the games at Chattanooga State the last two seasons. I feel that she has really developed as a player in her first two years, and we are very pleased to have someone with her experience and approach behind the plate. She is also a boxer, and I think the mental toughness that she has developed through her boxing career will help her become a leader for this young team."

• Going into her senior year at Heritage High School in Ringgold, Shea Headrick has committed to play softball at Tennessee Temple University. Headrick will be a three-year starter this fall and already has been a two-time high school Academic All-American. "While her career at Heritage has been as the starting right fielder, she is being looked at by Tennessee Temple at both an outfielder and an infielder," Heritage coach Steve Chattin said, noting that she is the 14th General to have signed or signed to play college softball -- and the sixth in the 2015 graduating class.

Track & Field

• Tennessee Wesleyan College keeps piling up the sprinters for its track and field team. The program's most recent signees are Cadarius Harris and Kalan Hardley from Tyner, who finished third and fourth in the 100-meter dash in the Class A-AA East Sectional this past spring, with Hardley taking second in the 200. He set Tyner's 200 record at 22.22 seconds and Harris set the 100 standard at 10.98 this year also, Hardley adding the Rams' third-best 100 ever, 11.10. "We are always excited to get local talent, and signing these two shows that we are committed to building a broad track program," TWC coach Shawn Jakubowski said in a school posting. "Cadarius and Kalan will be extremely valuable to the sprint program and will be instrumental in our relay teams this spring."

Golf

• The Dalton State men's golf team earned all-academic honors for 2014 from the Golf Coaches Association of America. The first-year program coached by former UTC player and assistant coach Ben Rickett was one of only eight NAIA teams honored for a team aggregate average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. Members of the team were Anthony D'Angelo, Levi Nix, Chase Jones, Toby Ebner, Sean Elliott, Max Bruck and individual all-academic honoree Tyler Mitchell, the only senior on the squad. "This is a great indication of what these guys achieved over the first year," Rickett said in a DSC release. "They did a very good job of balancing academics with the athletic aspects of college. We have expectations as a program, and being a complete student-athlete is one of them."
