Heidi Daniel became the first NAIA softball first-team All-American in Bryan College history after batting .448 with eight home runs, three triples, 14 doubles and 45 RBIs in the 2014 season. Daniel, a junior from Gallatin, Tenn., ranked 13th in the NAIA in total bases per game as the Lady Lions had their best season, finishing 31-23 and reaching an NAIA opening-round final. Bryan senior infielder Grant Zawadzki received NAIA baseball All-American honorable mention for a season in which he hit .386 with 22 doubles, 53 RBIs and 50 runs scored and the Lions lost to eventual national champion Cumberland in an NAIA opening round.

• The Chattanooga Cyclones SM and K baseball teams each went 3-1 in the Southern Wood Bat University of West Georgia Classic this past weekend. The SM team won 5-1 over the K team, 12-5 over OTC White and 10-2 over the Bullpen Braves and lost to OTC Black. Cole Vaughn, Logan Fugate and Matt H. Kenshaw were the winning pitchers for that Cyclones group, with Cory Edgemon, Brody Binder, Hunter Mercer and Nick Gaddis pacing the offense. Devin Lancaster pitched a one-hitter and Jackson Bell and Caleb Collins also recorded mound wins for the Cyclones K, who beat OTC White 8-0 and won 9-1 over the Bullpen Braves and 12-2 over the Atlanta Sportstech Stars. Noah Hill, Logan Haga, Peyton Tenant, Cade Evans and Collins were top batters.

Fishing

• Two-person teams from Soddy-Daisy finished second and third in the Tennessee high school fishing state tournament held Saturday out of Dayton Boat Dock on Lake Chickamauga. Elijah Cartwright and Jacob Thomas caught five fish totaling 23 pounds, 6 ounces to take second, and Alyssa Coleman and Erica Abigail Smith were third with a five-fish limit of 23-2. There were 244 entries representing 40 high schools, and Waverly Central's Dylan Fuller and Caleb Conrad won with 25-7. Rhea County's Shane Broadwell and Brice Travis (20-7) were fifth, and Walker Valley's Cole Sands and Caden Watson (18-12) were sixth. Broadwell and Travis landed the tournament's biggest fish (8-4). Also among the 12 teams advancing to the conference championship event were Warren County's Hunter Bouldin and David Jaco, 10th at 15-1; Central's A.J. Barnes and Gavin Ainslie, 11th at 14-8; and Rhea's Dillon Moore and Kenneth Clark, 12th at 13-14.

Auto Racing

• Sisters Mattie and Chloe Keener from Dunlap battled for the Junior Dragster victory and $1,000 Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip, Mattie winning by inches with an 8.22-second run on an 8.22 dial. Chloe earned $300 for her runner-up 8.55 run on an 8.54 dial. Melvin Croft won the Super Pro class with a 7.82 burst on a 7.82 dial in a 1969 Dodge Dart, and Gary Blankenship was second in a 1968 Camaro SS, losing on a breakout 5.13 on a 5.14 dial. Jeff Montgomery drove his 1986 Mustang from Powder Springs, Ga., and won the Foot Brake class with a 6.54 run on a 6.54 dial, relegating strip Hall of Famer L.C. Bigham to second place. Cynthia Warnock again had the low elapsed time (4.61 seconds) and top speed (149.50 mph) of the meet.

Lacrosse/Field Hockey

• Laura "Mac" McIntyre has been hired from McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., to assist Michele Dombroski in both field hockey and women's lacrosse at Sewanee. McDaniel was an ECAC lacrosse finalist in 2013 and a semifinalist this year. McIntyre was a lacrosse goalkeeper for Gettysburg's NCAA Division III national champions in 2011 and was 12-0 as a starter, and she started 37 matches in the midfield as Gettysburg went 47-27 during her field hockey playing career. "I am very excited to join the Sewanee community," she said, after a "wonderful experience" at McDaniel. "I am extremely excited to have Mac join our programs," Dombrowski said in the announcement release. "She is passionate about both sports, as well as the student-athlete experience."
