Two Bradley County deputies have been suspended for leaving a handcuffed prisoner in a holding cell overnight last week with no access to water, food or a bathroom.

Sheriff's office spokesman Bob Gault said in a news release that the arresting deputy was suspended for 20 days and his supervisor for 10 days. Neither deputy's name or experience level was provided in the release.

Gault said Sheriff Jim Ruth and Chief Deputy W.G. "Buck" Campbell apologized to Nathaniel Caldwell and his family.

The release said "[T]here is no excuse for this incident, and neglect of inmates will not be tolerated by the Sheriff's Office."

It added, "The Sheriff's Office has policies and procedures along with established practices and customs in place that should have prevented this incident."
