The Candidate

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Good cartoon today Clay. As have been some other recent offerings.

I’ve posted this before but today’s subject warrants a reprise:

It’s high time the populace of this country to finally admit to themselves (as I have) that the United States government, our government - “A nation, conceived in Liberty. A government of the people, by the people, for the people" has been transformed into a vast criminal enterprise, whose sole purpose is to provide the means by which the predator class legalizes and carries out its program of fraud, theft, exploitation, conquest and domination. We now live in a land with a lawless (un)-representative government; where the powerful and important make, then break the law, and never be brought to account.

What’s being passed off come 2016 elections amount to no more than a competition between debased and rancid crime families for temporary supremacy in the role of head of the District of Columbia's chief Mafia consigliores’ and enforcers.

Our vaunted leaders are no more than the vanguard of an army of brazen and soulless Mafiosi bureaucrats who think nothing of engaging in acts of fraud, theft, mass murder, torture, brutality, and the literal destruction of planet earth in order to feed their insatiable lust for wealth beyond the dreams of avarice, as well as the deviant joy that all sociopathic/imbecilic personalities experience from the infliction of suffering in others.

According to the Declaration of Independence, governments "derive their just powers from the consent of the governed" -- alas, today that "consent" amounts to nothing more than the sheep being ‘allowed’ a choice of whether to appoint a blue wolf or a red wolf, chosen - not by consensus, but fiat by elites as representatives/guardians of the flock.

If that reality is to ever change, it will have to come from outside accepted channels of political redress (tax strike anyone?), which as things currently stand amount to no more than the plank strapped precariously over the sea. It matters not that you are cast into the azure deep, for the pirate ship of state already has your booty.

A quote from Kafka's "The Trial" comes to mind:

“It is not necessary to accept everything as true, one must only accept it as necessary. A melancholy conclusion,” says Josef. “It turns lying into a universal principle.”

June 8, 2014 at 10:43 a.m.

"Brazen and soulless" is right on the mark. D.C. is as corrupt as any criminal enterprise could be. "crime families" is right on the mark, as well. Clinton vs Bush?? That's a possibility. The general news media is bought and paid as well. We're not even given the respect or consideration "sheep" would get. We're just expendable. Eisenhower was dead on about the military industrial complex, and, as much as I believe in capitalism, corporations/ lobbyists make me want to vomit. We're being run by the Government and the police state is getting stronger.

It is unfortunate there are too few with the bravery to take any action. There is no longer a hunger for freedom as in that famous quote of "give me liberty or give me death". Oh me, that may not be politically correct!

June 8, 2014 at 1:56 p.m.

fairmon, I agree. A tax strike might the be only things, accept that we're living in a tyranny of some kind, a police state for sure. Some people might that's an extreme statement, but I stick to it. Those greedy bastards in D.C. will never give up their gold mine and will punish anyone who tries.

They're all in on it, GOP, Dems, BO, Senate, Congress, and most importantly, the bureaucracy. Look at all the wealthy, and getting wealthier, areas around D.C. populated by bureaucrats and D.C. elites.

BO wouldn't be able to get away with a lot he's doing if everyone wasn't in on it.

Ah, still wet behind the ears, that explains a lot, Z.

To his credit, Eisenhower said war is an evil thing and saw what the military-industrial complex would devolve into, that does not make him a great statesman or noble person.

Why would I be surprised that President Obama has continued a civilian spy program that began in the Reagan era, not in the J.E. Hoover era? Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. His damage to civil liberty is not to be ignored but pales in comparison to those excesses of Hoover and Bush.

The post-war 1950's gave us all the social ills you guys like to lament, it created the migration of African Americans to Northern cities and break down of the family, Viet Nam, it revealed the hypocrisy of wealth and the seduction of leisure, and fed the growth of the technological state as a reaction to the Great Depression and WWII. At least I got a good education out of it. I learned also from the 1950's that the media is a propaganda machine for the status quo aimed at weak brains, so you Reds ought to wake up while you watch FOX or listen to Rush Limberger, and any Blues that watch their favorite broadcasters except for entertainment have no excuse either. The humor is quite good and ironic, though.

I should have said to fairman, there is nothing to stop you from refusing to pay income tax, why wait for us?

After you've gone to the library and done a little in-depth research on the subject, come back and have an intelligent conversation on it, jack.

To help you get started, answer a few questions: 1. Why and when did the migration of African-Americans to northern cities occur? 2. What is the difference in de facto and de jure segregation? 3. What is the consequence of a high urban population density of low skilled workers when the job opportunities are low? 4. Why is the percentage of home ownership in the population of Mississippi higher than any other state? 5. What was the consequence to the Southern Democratic Party as a result of Lyndon Johnson supporting and pushing through the Civil Rights Act? 6.How are the circumstances of African American families in the urban ghetto similar to those of families supported by "Caucasian" aka "white" males in urban domains during the Great Depression? 7. Why is the percentage of external giving ( for non-operating expense) by religious congregations low and decreasing? 8. How is the effect of poverty in rural/farming communities different from the effect in urban environments? 9. What is the effect of loss of the extended family on family dynamics? 10. Why is the percentage of income for charitable giving higher in low income brackets than high income brackets, and why is financial inequity increasing, not decreasing?

I could go on, but if you do honest, diligent and unbiased research on just these ten questions (yes I cheated, Number 10 is two questions), you'll find your way to the truth and it will set you free.

The impact of MSNBC on some participants here is evident. Why not watch more than one news source? It is evident when the truth is not being told and the news slanted but it also gives more than one view on an issue.

It is a good thing some members of congress are influenced by a business person or unemployment may be around 30% or more. How many government dependent and poor people employee and pay others to work in their business? The number of businesses failing and closing is alarmingly high but never reported on by the media.

Is there any successful business that does not pass on to the consumer any cost of taxes, fees and other legislated cost? It is unbelievable how many join in the political rhetoric about how bad those businesses are and how they should pay more taxes or fees. So, if the consumer is going to pay any tax or government imposed cost why require them to pay any taxes? Zero business tax and other imposed cost would be revenue neutral or actually increase revenue resulting from increased exports, consumer purchases and increased jobs to meet demand. More businesses would expand and many would move their operations to the U.S.

Con-man, glad you are back! Now maybe we can get down to brass tacks concerning your quick-draw judgmental behavior, especially of those who you think are practicing errant behavior that is repulsive to you:

Let's look at Romans 2:1-16. I'll paraphrase it but you can read the full text yourself, be sure to go back and read Chapter 1 as well:

"No matter who you are, you condemn yourself when you pass judgment on another person for sinning, for actually, you are doing the same thing. You know God will judge those who sin but who do you imagine yourself to be, to judge others for sin when you are a foul sinner yourself? Do you think you can avoid God’s judgment? Even one who sins apart from the law suffers apart from the law, everyone who sins under the law is judged under the law, because it does no good only to hear the law, it only does good to be righteous. When someone who does not possess the law instinctively does what the law requires, which is to love God above everything else and love your neighbor the same way, that someone has the law written on their heart and bears witness to it. That person's behavior and heart will suffice or not on judgment day. God knows what is written in the heart. Heed these words.”

And so con-man that is why I said I try to love you anyway and pray you lose your judgmental ways. They aren't good for either of us, as you can read.

June 9, 2014 at 10:32 a.m.

Illegal aliens crossing over the border are for the most part uneducated, and used to be bullied around by drug cartels, thugs and the government. So, they're easy pickins for manipulative politicians in this country, which would be almost all of them.

BO did what Bush the Younger did, he wrote an exception to the law when he signed it, ergo by Bush's interpretation, if that is what you refer to by "breaking the law," no law was broken - complain to Bush.

There is no legal basis to allege desertion or even that he went AWOL, only hearsay. There is no evidence anyone was killed looking for him, only hearsay from a dysfunctional military unit. Even if he went AWOL he was captured prior to 29 days making desertion an improper charge. He was promoted while in captivity, hmmm. Maybe it was a ploy on our part to infiltrate the Taliban...hmmm.

There is no way you can predict the future as to what those 5 folks might do, I'm sure our imprisonment hardened them, and you have no way to know what manner of sleuthing has been done to track them, they might even have turned.

Armchair quarterbacking always seems to be a fun hobby to pass the time when you have no desire to find something constructive to do, or are a talking head on TV/Radio.

You libs always try and control the dialogue. The soldiers in the unit are being discredited and there first hand account doesn't count, but your label of "dysfunctional" sticks? He deserted, he walked off and then was held by the Taliban. Soldiers died looking for him. That's a fact as well. What makes it a fact? They're dead.

"prison has hardened them" nice set what you're saying is if they weren't imprisoned they would kinder and gentler? They WILL resume where they left off. "turn" You do realize the Islamofacist war on anyone who does not believe has been going on since 500a.d. long before the US was around. It was a horrendous blunder on the part of Obatguano to release those 5. Why should I take your word that they won't kill Americans again when one of them said he would.

Bergdahl is a deserter, and has even blasted America.

What you libs do is smear when you're losing the debate.

Then, a few months later, the sergeant found himself in trouble after pictures appeared online ..." so go figure what story you want to believe in the fog of an illegal war Bush started and Congress allowed to continue.

IQ says "so far there is no evidence anyone "lost their life" looking for Bergdahl, just some rightfully upset parents among many who lost their son in an illegal war and are looking for scapegoats." That may be true, Q, but the parents may be right, also. No?

inq. sorry you don't scare me. You libs try and control the dialogue. It's not going to work. Nobody wantS to do something about his lawlessness because he's the first black president. If anyone criticizes him the race card is pulled asap. You libs think only you are allowed to bring up race. You want race to be an issue so it will distract from the real issue which is his lawlessness, the lawlessness of the fed. government, and our ever growing police state.

zablee... Is that distinction important to you? You agree the tea bag tie, but take issue that white supremacists may be wrongly implicated?

The question for all religions is how one can be right with their particular god/God.

Christianity is the ONLY religion whereby one is made right with God apart from doing good works.

However, the majority of PROFESSING/FALSE Christians also believe they too are made right with God through doing good works/performing some ritual/ going through some confirmation process/being a good person/ sacraments or some combination of these.

You are one of these. You strongly believe this. I suspect you even went through some infant baptism or some form of baptism and other sacraments and therefore you believe you are going to heaven.

You have believed the doctrines of men and NOT the doctrines of Scripture.

I believe this has a lot to do with why you don't understand Romans chapter 2.

Tea Party/White Supremacists. There is no tie.

June 9, 2014 at 5:38 p.m.

What distinction? What tie? How do you know they belong to the Tea party, dude? You libs are always trying to tie racism to the Tea Party. It's not going to work. Our government is clearly out of control, and corrupt. Trying to connect white supremacy to that is ridiculous. You can be liberal, conservative, Dem or GOP and see that.

If you will look at the introduction to Romans in any good study Bible, especially the outlines, you will begin to understand the purpose of Romans and the meaning of Romans chapter 2.

Just because those fools who shot those cops put a 'don't tread on me flag' over the bodies does not mean they represent the Tea Party folks/conservatives, or government critics, and are white supremacists. No more than black racists/thugs represent all black Americans and Democrats. Extremists are not exclusive to one group. Do blacks who play the knockout game represent all blacks?

Romans presents the Gospel, the Good News, of how sinful, bound for hell mankind can be right with God.

The first chapter centers on the condemnation of the Gentiles and their gross sins of Homosexuality and idolatry which the Gentile nations were famous for practicing in the worship of their false gods.

The second chapter centers on the condemnation of the Jew who was the moralist of his day due to having the law and it's commandments but in reality was no better off than the heathen they had contempt for.

The third chapter condemns all humanity.

The fourth chapter begins how mankind is made right (justified) before God apart from works.

I hate to engage a closed mind but con-man sez, "The question for all religions is how one can be right with their particular god/God., Christianity is the ONLY religion whereby one is made right with God apart from doing good works."

Not entirely evident from Paul, my good friend.

In the letter con-man cites as Paul's summary of the Gospel, and in the verses in Ch 2 he cites, Romans 2:14-16: "When Gentiles, who do not possess the law, do instinctively what the law requires, these, though not having the law, are a law to themselves. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, to which their own conscience also bears witness; and their conflicting thoughts will accuse or perhaps excuse them on the day when, according to my gospel, God, through Jesus Christ, will judge the secret thoughts of all. " So Paul himself admits it is possible for a non-believer to enter heaven.

You can get off the floor now.

If you go to seminary and read the texts in their original languages and also explore the thoughts of many commentators, you don't have to reply to someone's self-served interpretation found in a study bible which by necessity is brief and perfunctory. You will realize "Gentile" is a word encompassing all non-Jews, not just Greeks some of whom practiced unusual sexual behavior in their temples. You also would realize that Paul has great compassion for Judaism, that the early "Christians" were Jews who worshipped in the synagogue, not to "convert" their fellows but to celebrate the Lord with them. The Jerusalem revolt turned conservative Jew against Christian Jew. The third chapter acknowledges the fundamental flaw of all humanity, including you.

If you persist in traveling this road, you are going to tie yourself up in contradictory theological knots.

Con-Man, ever the Biblical scholar. What I find ironic, however, is that the Bible is word-for-word damning people to hell for being homosexuals; that it allows guys like Con-man to be Jesus' earthly judges, BUT if it says something that disproves what Con-Man says, then it is "the words say that, but this is what it implies" or "you're taking the words out of context (sorry about the run-on sentence)". So fake, so opposite of "Christian" is Con-Man.

Now Bergdahl's family is getting death threats; Stay Classy Conservatives.
