Owner: Family Dollar.

Location: 4697 Main Street, Jasper, Tenn.

Architect: ESD Architecture and Interior Design, Charlotte, N.C.

Contractor: Blevins Construction Management Inc.

Size: 8,320 square feet.

Scope: This store includes upgrades Family Dollar officials are using to jazz up the appearance of its 8,000 stores nationwide. The new design calls for a stucco and brick facade, an expanded assortment of grocery items, home goods and clothing and a new merchandising layout. Grocery items now will be at the back of the store. Clothing and home goods will be at the front.

History: The Family Dollar franchise was started in Charlotte, N.C., in 1959. The small-box brand has expanded into 46 states and employs 50,000 people. Family Dollar stock began trading publicly in 1970. In 2011, the franchise did $8.5 billion in sales. Jasper's Family Dollar is currently a storefront in the Ingle's strip mall on Main Street. The new store will be only yards away from its current spot, on land once occupied by an old motel and a house. In March, the old motel and house were torn down, and the process of bringing in fill dirt was begun.

Timeline: The new store is expected to open before summer's end, possibly as soon as early July.
