about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. Americans are shot to death everyday. 10,000 are gunned down every year. Men and women, boys and girls.

When something happens everyday it no longer qualifies as 'news.'

Not only do hillbillies and yahoos like Jack see nothing wrong with this, they call it the price of freedom.

I can't wait to see folks claiming that guns aren't the issue here. Why, /yes/, you /can/ kill a person with a knife, an automobile, or a jug of spoiled milk. In that case, why, precisely, do the VAST majority of massacres involve firearms? The answer: Firearms are easier to kill people with, being specifically designed for the task of killing.

MasterBlaster, blackwater48, AgentSchism How would you correct the problem? What enforceable law would prevent all deaths by gun? How would you be sure criminals and crazies were not gun owners?

It is easy to describe the problem and criticize or ridicule an opposing view but it is difficult to recommend workable solutions. What is the answer to this problem? If you were the decision maker in charge what would you do?

Is it time to confiscate all firearms and impose life imprisonment if found in possession of a firearm? Is it time to have government own all ammunition? Is it time to tax firearms and ammunition into oblivion?

Is it time to require anyone obtaining a drivers license to attend gun safety training then obtain a permit and gun before a drivers license is issued?

How many deaths by gun would you be ok with? Or, are you among those that want mass killings to stop and keep the deaths by gun to one or two at a time? Are you among those brilliant thinkers that advocate clip capacity or caliber of weapon limits to solve the problem?

If the Bible with it's morals were taught in the schools there would be a lot less gun violence/knife violence/club violence/hand to hand violence not only in our schools but in society as well.

It all begins in the immoral mind of an individual.

Mr. Bennett and his like minders are the problem in our society.

@fairmon: It is a specious argument to suggest since all gun deaths cannot be prevented, we should not try anything. You ask what should be done to reduce gun violence:

  • Magazine capacity limits
  • Restricting sales of weapons whose primary purpose is killing people
  • Close the gun show loophole for sales without background checks
  • Enhanced mental health services
  • Enhanced destruction of weapons used in crime after conviction
  • Increased numbers of BATF agents to review FFL adherence with a particular focus on gun dealers who traffic a disproprtionately large number of weapons
  • A requirement for gun manufacturers to keep a database of one bullet and cartridge for each newly manufactured weapon accessible for IBIS searches to identify guns used in crime
  • Outlawing deadly teflon-coated or frangible ammunition
  • Adoption of the change in the 2nd amendment to the Constitution as recommended by Justice John Paul Stevens: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms when serving in the Militia shall not be infringed.”
  • Elimination of the provision under law now preventing the CDC and others from studying the incidence and prevalence of gun violence

No actions can eliminate ALL gun deaths. Ultimately, gun deaths will only drop significantly when they become uncool, unsexy, unpopular. Many on the right hold both gun ownership and Christianity dear to their hearts without realizing the cognitive dissonance in that duality.

With a nod to St. Thomas Aquinas, 'To one who understands, no explanation is necessary. To one who does not, no explanation is possible.'

How does punishing that individual prevent a crime, or a mass shooting?

If all of a sudden, as I'm sure Obatguano would like it,all guns were confiscated from law abiding citizens, it will have no impact on criminals getting weapons and committing crimes, and those that want to shoot up schools will find a way to get guns, and other weapons to do their damage.

As for defending one's family by killing someone, it seldom happens in countries where guns are controlled. It also is a choice I'd not wish on anyone, but the hard teaching is still there. Violence is wrong. Yes Jesus certainly taught us to kill the one trying to kill us, didn't he? Selling a gun for use against another person is the antithesis of Christianity.

Oh, he just wants to use it to hunt? Hard choice, hard teaching; but I'd say get out of the business of selling guns so you do not have to make the choice and risk a sin.

James also said show me a person without Christian action and I'll show you one without faith.

You might be more effective with good action than with the puffery of partial quotations of scripture read without understanding. Christian action leads to understanding. Only reading scripture leads to puffery. Wake up!

You damn James and me for heresy, thereby damning yourself.

What Paul means is if you condemn any one for sin, you are also condemning yourself for your own sins. Unless you are sin-free, but you won't go there, will you? To put it another way, Christianity is a very democratic religion - all sin is equal, it separates you from God.

Not even James said you work your way into heaven, he said the color of your action shows where your faith lies, not all that different than Paul, but that seems to be another hard truth for you to swallow.

Your neighbor whose dad is an ass't DA is telling you who is a Christian and a Jew? ...!?

Everybody has to chose how to live. As Paul said, everything that is permissible is not necessary good. That applies to owning, using and selling guns. The blood of every innocent child killed by gun violence is on the hands of those who value their freedom to carry, use and sell guns over a child's life. You are free to do it but it is not good.

As far as immigration is concerned, I suggest we do what Reagan did; grant amnesty to all illegal aliens. Again, more misdirection on this issue. You guys want to attack the aliens, but what is bringing them here? Seriously crack down on people/businesses hiring illegals (jail time, hefty fines, etc.). But that would be more regulation on business and you GOP'ers can't tolerate that.

Z-fister,

Fat chance some gun toting criminal is going to invade your home, you are reading too many crime novels, actually believe the John Birch/Kock Bros/NRA literature, are watching too much FOX TV, or Charlton Heston reruns.

Look at the crime statistics in Britain, Switzerland and other democratic countries where there is gun control, for example. But hard evidence is to much trouble to heed.

As for immigrants you are just repeating your bigotry. They are humans just like you and deserve the same respect. I've worked with immigrant farm workers in other states. The majority of them, probably a larger number than good old US citizens, are profoundly committed and loyal to their families, sending large percentages of what they earn back home to them so they can live a better life while living in squalid conditions here.

You live by fear and paranoia, that is your sad choice, but it is not necessary. Your priorities are misdirected. I believe there is a quote I heard in church, loosely stated, "Do not fear the one who can take your life, fear the one who can take your soul."

I'm wasting my breath on you, but consider military assault rifles. If they had been restricted only to military use and not made available for sale in either fully automatic or semi-automatic form, unstable persons wouldn't be running around with them in high schools and elementary schools shooting at demons seen only in their minds. Every thing that is permissible is not necessary good.

As for our duly elected President protecting borders, what nation is attacking us? Has someone moved a border and squatted? Some rag-tag band of middle schoolers and teenagers from Mexico and Honduras? Give me a break. That reminds me of another loosely stated quote I heard in church once, "Let the children come to me."

If somebody who "walks across (the border) with ease" in search of a better life because US foreign policy refuses to allow aid to help their economy and then shoots someone (a largely tenuous hypothesis), is it the US voter's responsibility? No, it rests on two persons, the one pulling the trigger and whoever sold them the gun, lost the gun, or had it so unsecured it could be stolen. What is permissible is not always good to do. (Maybe also the third, the who manufactured the gun.) Everything that is permissible is not necessarily good.

Btw, I see one Red immigrant gave up his citizenship to his motherland, so he could set himself up to run for US president. Do you yourself trust someone with your country who has such limited loyalty to their own fatherland that they would give it up for power in another land? Will he next change citizenship to Texas? Do you know who he is? He bears an eerie resemblance to Joe McCarthy, if you want a hint.

June 11, 2014 at 11:35 a.m.

LOL gee, I couldn't have predicted those typical liberal responses. Are you all reading from the same script?

Hypocrisy on parade in this thread.

We clearly have a lawless president and you libs do everything you can to defend him.

By bringing up what other presidents have done doesn't make BO look any better. What Reagan did was wrong as well. You assume, once again, that everyone who criticizes BO belongs to the GOP or is ok with everything Republicans have ever done. You see, chumps, you're stupidly loyal to a party and to a man, and I use that term loosely, while what's going on is a humongous power grab by both parties, working together, to put the squeeze on citizens. On one hand we're in a police state/ we citizens are under a boot, while certain lawlessness is rampant and permitted to continue because it benefits the elites. The defeat of Eric Cantor by a citizen, not a career politician, is the way to go.

Go visit the suburbs and surrounding towns of D.C. and you'll see that they're dripping in wealth, and are now right at top as far as wealth goes. Career bureaucrats, politicians, aides, and government folks of all kinds.

How about shipping all the illegals to that area and let them house them, feed them and give them work.

inq. there's nothing sorrier than an old, suck up liberal. You of all people should recognize a growing police state, and astounding corruption by elites when you see it.

The Gospel tells us that we all are sinners in need of Salvation.

The Apostle Paul in presenting the Gospel in Romans must first show that one is a sinner and that he needs Salvation.

He does this in the first 3 chapters.

The Jews who he was primarily addressing had the law. The Jews led by the Pharisees believed they were made right with God by keeping the law which they never did and no man could.

The Gentiles did not have the law but they like ALL mankind have the law of conscience (chapter 2). They like ALL mankind often violate their conscience and sin.

ALL mankind, whether they have the written law and it's commandments or the law of conscience are condemned because they keep neither.

Being right with God, declared righteous, has never been accomplished by being a good person or doing good works, or performing sacraments or rituals etc.:

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Romans 3:20

If there was any respect at all for citizens in this country then there's no way this invasion would happen. There's always been people crossing the border, but the difference now is how the gov. is bending over backwards to get out of the way.

BO should be impeached, Holder as well, if that's what they do with AG's. Any congressman or senator that has done the same should be removed from office. Slaughter House Abortions in the United States per year = ONE POINT TWENTY-ONE MILLION!!! Well beyond/over ONE MILLION INNOCENT CHILDREN ARE BEING KILLED PER YEAR! I already know that Liberal Democrats don't consider anything like that worthy of their protestations.

Sad state you are in con-man. You need to understand Romans not just read it, regurgitate a study bible history and try to reduce it to some historical artifact only dealing with Jews. You miss the whole point.

Name me one person who has been declared righteous by God, con-man asks. Abraham maybe, he was reckoned righteous, but still you try to refute James by refusing to understand that if you have faith, you reveal it in action. I think you are trying to read a lot of Catholic theology into something that isn't there. You still have that strange passage to reconcile with your perspective, Rom 2:14-16. You still chose to ignore that.

But I waste my breath on you, it is about time to shake the dust off my shoes, I guess, and move on to the next house.

You have twisted logic, let us see, you say if they take our guns away, somehow criminals will get more and crime will increase?? The evidence does not support your claim. We have less restrictive gun laws due to a radical Red Supreme Court and action of the John Birch Society and NRA and we have more gun violence, especially among our youth. Seems to me the data is proving this claim: "Loose gun control and weak laws lead to more crimes of gun violence," the opposite of Z-bister's claim.

Jesus did tell the disciples there was no reason to stop the people claiming to be prophets who were doing miracles in his name because while they are claiming to be his prophet they cannot speak badly of God. Unfortunately some contributors around here are challenging that idea. I know how they are supposed to work in a republic which is not the same as a democratic form of government. It is intended to provide checks and balances that prevent a majority from dictating to a minority. Grid lock is actually good for the country and one of the reasons for an improving economy and stock market.

June 12, 2014 at 8:05 a.m.
inquiringmind said...

fairmon, I am not sure where you got your education on government and economy, smoking in the boys room? Please keep your kool-aid to yourself.

The whole intent of a democratic process (whether you want to call it a democratic republic or just a democracy) is majority rule. Majority rule is 50% +1. The checks and balances you refer to serve to ensure the change process is attained fairly and that constitutional protections are honored (including the option of a supermajority to change its operating principles). Checks and balances never are intended to serve to impose the will of the minority on the majority, but to ensure an orderly process of government. "Process" implies motion, not gridlock. In a democracy the fundamental premise is we live by majority rule whether we like it or not.

When the Senate votes 58-42 in favor of a piece of legislation but it cannot get passed because of a tactic of filibuster by the minority, the minority is engaged in mob rule, AKA "gridlock", pure and simple.

What you call "grid lock" represents the basest form of human behavior, a refusal to compromise with the will of the majority, a refusal to engage in constructive discourse and a desire to force your rejected ideals on everyone else.

The short term economy is certainly looking better for the 1%, but long term, your behavior is building social unrest that will come back to bite you.

Read your history books.

Cantor backs the flooding of illegal aliens into this country. That's what corrupt corporations want. What is that going to do for the millions of unemployed in this country. The unemployment among black Americans is astronomical. Cantor was in league with folks like Zuckerberg and Soros. No conservative would support illegal aliens flooding this country and week borders.

This is a Constitutional Republic, not a pure Democracy.

"the will of the majority" BO doesn't respect Congress because it's majority GOP. Just because a President is elected doesn't mean he has free reign to do as he pleases. This isn't a dictatorship. The House is where laws orginate, and the POTUS has no business picking and choosing what laws to enforce. If the president is lawless, nobody has to go along with him just because he's president. There's nothing that says The House has to rubber stamp what the POTUS wants. The country isn't majority Lefty, it's a center right country, just look at the maps. You libs feel that just because you got your lefty golden boy elected he should get his way on everything.

Even in the face of overt lawlessness you libs are in denial. The POTUS has a duty, it's in his oath, to defend this country and uphold the laws. In addition to defending the Constitution. BO has failed on all of that. BO is worse than Nixon, far worse, and Holder is far worse the John Mitchell, Nixon's AG.

This is complete corruption. Politicians are conspiring with certain corporations, and other entities like Unions and the Chambers of Commerce, to flood this country with illegal aliens for votes and for cheap labor. We have millions unemployed, under employed, and those that have given up. How does this help them.

You libs are immoral. You take advantage of millions of ignorant people in order to gain politically from them. You're greedy and power hungry. You have the nerv to claim you're doing it out of compassion, and accuse those who protest it of being "haters"

In fact both parties are guilty of the above. Jeb Bush is just as guilty of it as BO is.

June 12, 2014 at 9:23 a.m.

Exactly, Jack. Libs pick and choose what history is important.

Cantor lost because the people in his district, both GOP and Dems, saw that he, and many others like him in government are approving of lawlessness and endangering the citizens of this country, which are the people that matter. The well being of US citizens should be the primary concern, not that of illegal aliens who are being dumped here by Jackass countries who are in league with our jackass president. "love" has nothing to do with it.

BO and many of both parties care more about serving the interests of Mark Zuckerberg, George Soros, and many other folks with tons of money,...and corporations. Citizens of this country are being trashed and abused. Brat, the guy who beat Cantor, had no money, and no wealthy backers, he simply had a clear message.

June 12, 2014 at 9:39 a.m.

If Nixon was on the road to being impeached, before he resigned, and Clinton can be impeached for perjury for lying about sexual misconduct, then BO should be impeached for his out and out lawlessness and failure to do his duty. Throw the bum out.

If you guys aren't careful you are going to hurt someone with your flapping lips.

You say , "This is a Constitutional Republic, not a pure Democracy." You are being pedantic. The bottom line it is a government based on democratic principles, one person-one vote, majority rule. It has a system of checks and balances that require a super majority in certain cases, such as to override a veto when the President feels a law deserves a veto, and when we want to amend the constitution. For example, to change the method of electing senators, to allow women to vote, to ban slavery.

The filibuster IS NOT part of the Constitution, it is a rule of the senate devised to allow a minority to thwart the majority by continually flapping lips.

Let me repeat that, The filibuster IS NOT part of the Constitution, it is a rule of the senate.

It has never been used for honorable purposes to my knowledge, but only to thwart the will of the majority, for example in outlawing segregation, for voting to renege on our honorable Federal promise to pay our national debts and interest on bonds.

You may want to mince words and say the rules of the senate allow it, but it would be interesting to see a constitutional challenge to the Supreme Court.

You my dear z-bister and friends are thankfully in a minority growing smaller by the day. Like Samson you risk pulling the temple down upon your own heads.

When the minority can thwart the will of the majority, it is called a dictatorship. Of course you don't support dictatorships, do you?

What does BO stand for anyway..even at this point? What is the movement and toward what end? Chaos, lawlessness, corruption, police state, corporations whoring themselves out to the highest bidder in the Senate, House and WH?

It is hilarious to hear a lib accuse conservatives of fascism. What projection! Libs want the governments ugly fingers in every aspect of our lives, and conservatives are the ones who are fascists? How does that work?

Pretty soon the Gov. will be counting how many times we flush the toilet.

Z-whatever, you are quite correct. Unfortunately it is both the major parties which have brought us to this sad state. We can, of course, identify many occasions when the Democrats attempted to move policies forward which were in the public interest but the Rethugs were able to block/filibuster them so, on balance, it is the party of big business, big money, starve-the-poor and enrich-the-already-rich than are far more to blame and far more describable as fascist. It is none other than the Republican majority Supreme Court that has conferred "personhood" upon corporations and made financial transaction equivalent to speech. Look at the situation objectively and I believe you can only agree.

No, the GOP is not THE party of big business. Those are just stale talking points. Democrat have some of the largest corporations in their back pocket. Contributions to Democrats are through the roof. Big money? Really? Have you seen who supports the Democrat Party? Both parties have certain corporations in their back pockets. Starve the poor? How does allowing millions and millions of illegal aliens to pour into this country help, say, poor blacks in big cities or poor whites in Appalachia..or anywhere else. Both parties are morphing into the same beast. Look how they're both ignoring the borders. They're both doing it for votes, but mostly to please big corporations who donate to them. It's corrupt.

The Democrat Party has plantation mentality when it comes to blacks, and, apparently, same goes for hispanics. They want them dependent on them.

It's not a Republican majority SCOTUS, it's 4 right leaning, and 4 left leaning, and one who can go either way depending on the issue. You libs didn't complain when they upheld the abomination known as Obamacare.

As I said, it appears that I clearly touched a sensitive nerve. They forgot what happened to the stock market the last time they pulled a full shutdown.

thanks to the greedy, gridlocking republicans.

It takes two parties to have gird lock, one party can't do it alone. What are the good paying jobs creating proposals made by the democrats? What bills have they introduced that would improve the middle class situation.

Obama's administration is crumbling. Most recent confirmation of his ineptness are the VA, the leaking borders with 100,000 or more orphan kids expected to cross the border this year. Several Texas cities are facing bankruptcy, the Iraq failure, the Afghanistan failure, release of 5 high ranking terrorist from GITMO. The IRS and dead Syrian diplomats scandals are still being investigated.

His nonexistent management skills are evident and his inability to select capable members for his administration are showing up big time.
