Volunteers needed for Southern Amateur at Honors

The Classic Club, The Honors Course and the Southern Golf Association are seeking 125-150 volunteers to assist with the prestigious Southern Amateur to be held July 16-19 at the Honors.

Past champions of the tournament include Bobby Jones, Lew Oehmig, Lanny Wadkins, Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Davis Love III, Justin Leonard, Webb Simpson and Harris English.

Positions need to be filled in the areas of scoring, spotting, shuttling, scoreboards, hospitality, practice facilities and standard-bearing. Volunteers do not need to work all shifts during the tournament, but for $30 each will receive a golf shirt, hat and the opportunity to play the course. Dalton State signs Gordon Lee star

Gordon Lee golfer Ashley McDonald, the medalist in a 2014 Georgia Class A state sectional, has signed with Dalton State to continue her golf career.

"We are really excited to have Ashley join our program," coach Jim McGrew said in a DSC release. "We feel like she has tremendous potential, and her 4.0 GPA for all four years of high school shows that she will fit in well in terms of what we are looking for in a student-athlete."

Area ace

Dirk Kain made his first hole-in-one in 24 years of playing golf last Saturday at Brown Acres. He used a pitching wedge for the 94-yard shot on No. 14, witnessed by Vince Slasor, Spensor Slasor and Matt Newell.
