The Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball will put four teams on the field Sunday, June 15, for Chattanooga's first vintage double-header.
The Father's Day games start at noon and 2:30 p.m. at Historic Engel Stadium. In the first matchup, the Oak Hill Travellers will face the Franklin Farriers. In the second game, the Highland Rim Distillers will challenge the Nashville Maroons.
Players -- or "ballists" -- wear Civil War-era uniforms and follow the rules and customs of 1864 baseball. As authentic reenactors, ballists use phrases such as "Striker to the line!" and "Stir your stumps!" Baseball was a gentleman's game back then, with no spitting, no swearing and no gloves.
The event is co-hosted by the Engel Foundation. Spectators are encouraged to bring blankets and folding chairs. Concessions will be available. Admission and parking are free.
