UTC golfer Emily McLennan won the Women's State Amateur championship Friday in Knoxville.

Emily McLennan earned an extra bite of berry cobbler with lunch on Friday.

She split it with University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golf teammate Sarah Dolmovich after McLennan won the Tennessee Women's Amateur championship at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville.

"We shared the dessert," McLennan said, noting that her teammate helped as her caddie once McLennan dispatched Dolmovich in the round of 32.

"We had an agreement that whoever won would get support from the other," McLennan said over the phone. "I had nobody to carry my bag, so I asked if she wanted to caddie."

The UTC team worked perfectly.

McLennan defeated two-time champion Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City and Vanderbilt 3 and 2 and became the first UTC golfer to win the women's state amateur.

McLennan, who grew up in Australia, also was the Southern Conference medalist in April.

"To win my first event of the summer will be good going into these other events," McLennan said. "I stuck to my game plan, and it came out as well as it could have."

Dolmovich, who prepped at Signal Mountain High School, and McLennan roomed with each other for the week, but they never extended the reservation for Thursday night, so they stayed with friends in Knoxville.

They faced off Wednesday morning with McLennan winning 4 and 3. Dolmovich picked up the bag that afternoon and helped McLennan win 7 and 6 over Lindy Mae McGuire of Maryville.

McLennan won twice again Thursday, 3 and 2 over Lee University's Sam Burrus of Nashville, then 8 and 6 over Lynda Wimberly of Brentwood.

"Sarah helped me a lot," McLennan said. "She made me more confident about what club to hit or what line to take. Plus, we were having fun and making jokes and having a good time."

Martindale, a senior at Vanderbilt, led McLennan by two holes through four. McLennan won the next two to square the match. She won No. 9 with a birdie to go 1 up. Martindale won No. 13.

Then McLennan closed the match with three wins in a row, including the last two with birdies.

"I played the back nine really well all week," she said. "It was very clutch all day, and we tried to put pressure on the other person all day."

McLennan handled it all week, and Tennessee Golf Association officials handed her the championship trophy.

• Maggie Scott from Charleston won the first flight with a 3-and-2 win over Crossville's Jean Kraft, and Vonore's Bonnie Wood won the second flight with a 2-and-1 victory over Natalie Kratts of Knoxville. Oak Ridge's Carolyn Singer won the third flight.
