Late June is usually a docile time in the college football world, but that's not the case at Tennessee.
The Volunteers have 18 commitments for their 2015 signing class after receiving nonbinding pledges from five prospects since Saturday. The latest to commit was kicker Tommy Townsend from Orlando, Fla., who made his announcement Monday afternoon.
"Just committed to the University of Tennessee!" Townsend posted on Twitter. "It's an honor and a blessing!
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Townsend is rated the No. 2 punter nationally by 247Sports.com and the No. 5 kicker nationally by Rivals.com. He also had scholarship offers from Baylor and Colorado, according to 247Sports.
Tennessee this past weekend received commitments from tailback Alvin Kamara (5-11, 195) of Norcross, Ga., tight end Kyle Oliver (6-4, 226) of Murfreesboro, and defensive tackle Quay Picou (6-2, 260) and linebacker Austin Smith (6-3, 220) of Buford, Ga.
Kamara signed with Alabama in 2013, redshirted last season and received a release from his scholarship in January. He will play this season at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas before returning to the Southeastern Conference in 2015.
Rivals rates Oliver as the No. 14 tight end nationally and Picou as the No. 23 defensive tackle. Smith is the No. 73 outside linebacker according to 247Sports.
Tennessee's class is rated seventh nationally by Rivals and 247Sports. The six schools ahead of the Volunteers are Alabama, which is No. 1 in both services, Clemson, Texas A&M, Penn State, Auburn and South Carolina.
