Sport Allmond qualifies for U.S. Junior Amateur

Ringgold resident Sport Allmond qualified Monday at Old Fort Golf Club in Murfreesboro for the U.S. Junior Amateur next month at The Woodlands, Texas, near Houston.

Allmond, a 16-year-old junior at Heritage High School, shot a 4-under-par 140 (69-71) for the 36 holes and was the third of three qualifiers for the July 21-26 national event at The Club at Carlton Woods' Jack Nicklaus Course.

Two in Southern Am

Keoni Vidrine from Delano, Tenn., and the Tennessee Wesleyan golf program and Richard Spangler from Hixson were among the six qualifiers Tuesday at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville for the Southern Amateur being held ..... at The Honors Course. Vidrine was one of four shooting 65s, and Spangler got in with a 69.

Chattanooga's Andrew Weathers was close with a 71, and his UTC teammates from Knoxville -- Kory Webb, Wes Gosselin, Stuart Thomas and Davis Bunn -- shot 72, 73, 74 and 75. Lee's Peyton Sliger from Maryville also had a 72.

Choo-Choo qualifier

The Choo-Choo Invitational, an amateur event drawing seniors, mid-amateurs and college players from the Southeast to compete at Council Fire, has announced that an open qualifying tournament will be held on the afternoon of July 26 at Council Fire. Tournament director Chris Schmidt said at least four Choo-Choo spots will be up for grabs. For more information contact him at chattanoogaamateurgolf@gmail.com.

"I've committed to at least four and as many as eight spots," Schmidt said. "The qualifier will be limited to the first 48 applicants."

Four-ball final today

The Chattanooga District Golf Association four-ball championship will be determined today at 4 p.m. at Black Creek Club. The last two teams are from public courses: Richard Keene and Tom Schreiner of Brainerd will face Matt Crowder and Davis Watts of Chatata Valley.

Men's Metro open

The CDGA Men's Metro tournament will be held July 11-13 at Brainerd Golf Course. It is open to amateur golfers who live within 30 miles of CDGA clubs. Applications are available at www.IfYouLikeGolf.com.

Area aces

Willie Cowan made his first hole-in-one on June 17 at Brainerd, covering the 200 yards on No. 6 with a 5-iron. He was playing with Albert Hicks, Craig White and Bobby Hampton.

Bill Wayland sank his first hole-in-one Monday at Moccasin Bend while playing with Jim Scarbrough and Ray Hennessee. Wayland's ace was a 150-yard shot with a 5-iron on No. 3.
