Chattanooga firefighters responded to an apartment fire at 918 Hamilton Ave. shortly after 6 tonight.

Battalion Chief Don Bowman said a mattress was on fire in one of the five apartment units in the building. Chief Bowman said the firefighters had the fire out in less than five minutes, containing the fire to one room. No injuries were reported.

Chief Bowman said the fire damaged the wiring in the building, so EPB had to cut the power to the building, leaving about a dozen people and two dogs without a place to stay. Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee were called in to assist the displaced residents with overnight accommodations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Chattanooga police and Hamilton County EMS also provided assistance on the scene.
