The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team wound up with a regional ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the 2013-14 season. Coach Jeff Clark's Mocs were slotted No. 9 in the Ohio Valley Region with an 18-5 record and third-place finish in the Southern Conference. Vanderbilt was ranked No. 1 with Kentucky, Tennessee and Memphis second through fourth. UTC beat two NCAA tournament teams, Elon and Murray State, in the regular season, and all five losses were to teams that made the final ITA rankings. Eight of the nine Mocs are set to return for 2014-15.

• Bledsoe County's Ashley Brown signed scholarship papers earlier this week to continue her softball career at Bryan College in nearby Dayton, which is coming off its first appearance in the NAIA national tournament. "It's a nice little campus," Brown said. "It's not too big. I like it. It's a good Christian school." Brown was Bledsoe's offensive leader last season, topping the Lady Warriors with a .533 batting average, five triples, 12 doubles, 30 RBIs, 34 runs scored and 22 stolen bases. She has the ability to play either middle-infield position, as well as catcher. "She's a good kid," said Bledsoe coach Ricky Ritchie, who first coached her when she was 8 years old. "She had a couple of other offers, but she wanted to stay close to home where her mom and dad could watch her play more often. They lost a lot of seniors at Bryan off last year's team. It wouldn't shock me if she started as a freshman." Brown said she's considering majoring in exercise science.
