Redskins should change name and other letters to the editors

Redskins should change name

There are many Indians in the United States, a number of whom are American citizens. But they are not the ones who are offended by the use of the term Redskins for a sports team. Native Americans have weighty reasons to be offended. The Free Press editor [June 20], seems to find this humorous, indulging himself in what he considers an argument ad absurdum reciting the names of other teams that might offend other groups. (He thinks his suggestion that Mad Hatters may offend the mentally ill is funny, but this is almost as crude and reprehensible as the offense in chief.) The legacy of the relations between European colonists and Native Americans is one of brutality, murder, betrayal and theft. The ethnic cleansing committed in modern Europe is not more horrifying, Nothing can erase that shameful history. The least white Americans can do is not to expropriate the identity of the first Americans for commercial purposes, nor sneer at the pain it causes. If Native Americans resist being abused in this way, decent people will acquiesce graciously. It is not for the Free Press editor to say they are misinformed or unreasonable.

Veterans Administration problems need resolution

We must be asking ourselves, "What's next?" Wars seem to have no stopping place, with crime and violence getting worse every day. The Veterans Administration has all kinds of problems, with no end in sight. I know of a veteran who was given a medical discharge during the Vietnam War due to a heart problem and has had a service-connected backlog claim filed for over five years. Since then he almost passed away and now has a defibrillator implanted in his chest. He does not intend to give up his fight for his service-connected disability benefits. It also took me five years to get my Social Security disability and VA benefits. This veteran was given Social Security disability benefits in less than a month and therefore didn't expect to have problems with the Veterans Administration, but as the readers of this fine newspaper know, it's nothing new, with many other serious problems with the VA, the worst being veterans passing away waiting for their hard-earned health care and not getting it. These veterans have to be wondering and asking, "Is this fair?" Of course the answer is no. Hopefully, the problems will be resolved very soon.

What's wrong with America

Here are 10 things that are wrong with America: seeing the America I love going to the dogs; people telling me I came from a monkey; the global warming crowd; infanticide being called a choice; sexual perversion being called marriage; free speech advocates restricting speech; power-mad politicians; oblivious, uneducated voters; the "we're all going to heaven" crowd; Christians who won't unite and take a stand! Number 1 is the problem. Number 10 is the solution.

As usual the Fundy-NutZ get it wrong.

"people telling me I came from a monkey;"

You may have come from a monkey; I don't know your parents. But the explanation of evolution doesn't say that. It says you share a common ancestor with other primates.

"the global warming crowd;"

Temperatures have risen. That's a fact. Get your head out of the sand or lower warm body orifice.

"infanticide being called a choice;"

Infanticide is the killing of live babies as Jehovah had his people do throughout the Old Testament. Abortion is the removal of a fetus. Science isn't your strong suite, is it?

"sexual perversion being called marriage;"

Your sexual acts may be perverted, but marriage is not connected to sex except in the mind of Fundy-NutZ. To normal people it's a recognized union of two people through a civil action.

"free speech advocates restricting speech;"

Because public schools won't allow creationism taught as science and Christianity isn't allowed to proselytize in public schools and government? When can people come to your Sunday School and teach your children about evolution, science, atheism, and mythology? Are you denying those teachers free speech?

"power-mad politicians;"

You mean the religious right Christian Crusaders? Huckabee, Santorum, Palin? Those that insist on more wars like McCain and Graham?

"oblivious, uneducated voters;"

Like ignorant, anti-science, anti-intellectual Fundy-NutZ?

"the "we're all going to heaven" crowd;"

Like ignorant, anti-science, anti-intellectual Fundy-NutZ who think they're all going to heaven?

"Christians who won't unite and take a stand!"

You mean the type of religiously inbred, slow-witted, blinder-wearing Christians just like you? Please, take a seat. Your religious tripe has lasted too long, hasn't worked, and never will. Keep it in your churches and homes, but out of public schools and government.

The solution is to get your head out of ancient myths and take a look at reality without your Jesus and Jehovah goggles. There is no need of imaginary gods whether it's Jehovah, Allah, or Zeus. Read a book besides the BIble and BIll O'Reilly. Turn off Billy Graham and John Hagee and watch COSMOS.

I know it will be scary to think for a change, but that's how progress is made.

It needs to be noted that "redskins" is a pejorative. It would be no different than calling a team the "Wetbacks".

What's wrong with America? I'd say it's more on the side of the willfully ignorant, science-deniers. Larry Gordy, to say you came from a monkey would be an insult to monkeys. Do some actual research on evolution and the mountains of collaborative evidence that backs it up. To me, it's a very spiritual feeling knowing that all life on earth is related on a grand scale.

Native Americans have no political power. If they did all the pejorative nicknames would disappear.

I'll agree with Mr. Gordy on one thing: there are too many "oblivious, uneducated voters." It sounds like he's among the ill-educated and oblivious, but perhaps he recognizes that that's a problem.
