Lady Mocs lost to South Alabama

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wound up 2-3 in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Softball Classic with a 2-1 loss Sunday against South Alabama at Gulfport. The Lady Mocs (10-9) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by shortshop Criket Blanco to score Sam Taylor, but South Alabama scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to get the win. Junior pitcher Taylor Deason started for UTC and gave up to runs (one earned) on four hits in 3 1/3 innings. Katie Henderson pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk while striking out four.

• Lee 6, West Georgia 3: At Cleveland, Dominique Hannah's grand slam did the bulk of the damage for the Lady Flames the finale of the three-game Gulf South series. Hannah cleared the bases with a shot to centerfield in the third inning to give Lee a 4-0 lead. Angie Hughes started and got the win after pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing six hits and three runs. Freshman pitcher Hailey Clark picked up her first career save with 1 2/3 innings of relief, and she also went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

• Georgia Gwinnett 6-5, Bryan 5-4: Saturday at Lawrenceville, Ga., Cassidy Littlefield and Hailey Ingram took turns batting in three runs for the 5-2 home team, while Heather Daniel and Heidi Daniel homered and drove in three and two runs in the first game and Katie Vaughn was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game two for Bryan (6-5). Taylor Yates was 3-for-4 and scored twice in the opener; Olivia Gore was 3-for-5 in the rematch.

Tennessee baseball sweeps

The Tennessee baseball team beat Quinnipiac 9-4 on Sunday to to complete at three-game sweep in Knoxville.

The Vols scored seven runs in the first two innings and starter Kyle Serrano pitched six strong innings to help UT hold on for the win.

Taylor Smart and Will Maddox each had three hits in the victory and Maddox scored three times for the Vols, who improved to 10-0 on the season.

Tennessee will host La Salle for a pair of games Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to Tempe, Ariz., to take on No. 19 Arizona State in a three-game weekend series.
