CLARKESVILLE, Ga. - A large fire did heavy damage to historic buildings in downtown Clarkesville, when flames swept through the downtown area in the northeast Georgia mountain town.

Firefighters responded to the initial blaze at the Sweet Breads Cafe, housed in an old warehouse that dates to the 1930s on East Water Street, around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

CBS Atlanta reports that the flames quickly spread from the restaurant to the back of the business, which faces Washington Street.

WXIA-TV reports that at least a half-dozen businesses were damaged in the Habersham County town about 80 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Habersham County Commissioner Natalie Crawford tells WSB-TV that the buildings were filled with pine wood, which fueled the blaze. She said the devastation has left townspeople heartbroken.

There were no reports of any injuries.
