Dozens arrested at Massachusetts 'Blarney Blowout'

AMHERST, Mass. - Police in riot gear have arrested at least 35 people participating in the pre-St. Patrick's Day "Blarney Blowout" at the University of Massachusetts' flagship campus in Amherst.

WWLP-TV reports that at least four police officers have been hurt as they worked to disperse hundreds of unruly students who were throwing beer cans and bottles at police on Saturday. The officers did not require serious medical attention.

A spokesman for UMass Amherst did not return calls for comment.

Amherst Police Capt. Jennifer Gundersen says officers used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.

Gundersen says officers had UMass shut down bus service on the campus to prevent the crowd from swelling even more.

Most of the people in custody have been charged with failing to disperse.
