UTC softball beats Toledo; Lady Vols sweep Tennessee Tournament

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team wrapped up play at the USF Under Armour Showcase on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Toledo.

UTC (13-11) took a lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-our RBI single by Criket Blanco to score Alyssa Taylor who had singled with one out.

Toledo tied the game in the top of the second on an RBI double by Erinn Wright off of Lady Mocs starting pitcher Rachel Albritton, but UTC reclaimed the lead in the third inning when Sam Taylor scored on a wild pitch.

From there, junior pitcher Taylor Deason shut down the Toledo lineup in relief of Albritton. Deason pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out six to pick up the victory and improve her record to 7-5 on the season.

Lady Vols sweep

The No. 2 Tennessee softball team beat Georgia Southenr and College of Charleston on Sunday to wrap up a 4-1 weekend as the host team of the Tennessee Tournament in Knoxville.

The Lady Vols (21-2) beat GSU 2-0 to open the day, and followed with a 3-0 win over the Cougars to end the weekend.

Against Georgia Southern, Ellen Renfroe pitched a complete-game shutout to improve her pitching record to 12-0. Renfroe allowed five hits and struck out six Eagles batter.

Offensively Madison Shipman was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Lady Vols, who scored their runs on sacrifice flies by Melissa Davin and Hannah Akamine.

Shipman continued her solid day against College of Charleston, again going 2-for-3 at the plate. The shortstop hit her seventh home run of the seaon.

Rainey Gaffin pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the win for UT, and Renfroe pitched the final three innings for her second save of the season.

Tennessee will take on Western Carolina on Tuesday at home before opening Southeastern Conference play this weekend with a trop to Arkansas.
