Lawyer: Ex-Atlanta superintendent 'seriously ill'

ATLANTA - Former Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Beverly Hall's lawyer is expressing doubts whether his client can endure an upcoming trial in the system's test-cheating scandal because she's battling stage 4 breast cancer.

Attorney Richard Deane said at a Tuesday court hearing that Hall was admitted to a hospital on Saturday and released on Sunday.

Deane said he will consult with Hall's doctors on what course of action she should take next.

Hall is among more than 30 former administrators and teachers named in an indictment last year for their alleged involvement in a scheme to tamper with standardized test results. Hall has pleaded not guilty.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Superior Court Judge Jerry Baxter said jury selection for the lengthy trial is set to begin April 28.
