Browns Ferry unit shuts down

A reactor at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant is shut down because of a problem that occurred while it was being returned to operation after a refueling outage. A report from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says Unit 3 shut down automatically late Tuesday while at 35 percent power. The reactor had been idle for refueling and it was being brought back into service.

NRC spokesman Roger Hannah said Wednesday the problem occurred with a turbine, which is used to turn the steam into electricity on the non-nuclear side of the unit. Safety systems apparently operated normally to shut down the reactor because of the problem, he said.

Greenfield to add 100 more jobs

A manufacturer of heavy equipment attachments is investing $6.3 million to expand its operations in Union City, Tenn., adding 100 jobs during the next two years. Greenfield Products said Wednesday it is adding 80,000 square feet of manufacturing space to begin engineering and manufacturing custom fork-mounted attachments such as masts and carriages. The company also manufactures intermodal attachments including handling spreaders, container chassis shipping units and bomb carts for the container handling industry.

Greenfield Products said it will hire certified welders, fabricators, machinists, production planners and painters.
