The newest reactor at TVA's Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant should resume full power generation this weekend after problems in a controller card on the non-nuclear part of the plant forced a temporary shutdown of the unit during its restart this week. TVA spokesman Jim Hopson said Friday that the Unit 3 reactor shut down Tuesday when it was being restarted after a refueling outage. The control mechanism for one of the plant valves failed and, after being replaced, the reactor resumed power generation on Thursday and is ascending to 100 percent power by this weekend.

On Monday, TVA will begin a refueling outage at the Unit 1 reactor at TVA's Watts Bar Nuclear Plant and in May TVA will shut down Unit 2 at its Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plant for a similar refueling. TVA shuts down its reactors and replaces fuel rods in the units, on average, about every 18 months.

Flowers opens Knoxville bakery

Flowers Foods Corp. announced Friday it will open a Knoxville bakery in May that is expected to eventually employ more than 100 workers making Nature's Own, Merita and Wonder breads for parts of Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and Virginia.

"Whether it's ice cream, M&M's or bakery foods, Tennessee prides itself on producing high quality goods enjoyed around the United States and the world," said Bill Hagerty, Tennessee's chief economic recruiter.
