Semi-nude intruder prompts police call
CALHOUN, Ga. - Calhoun police called to a Garden Hills Drive home here Monday just before 6 a.m. about a break-in arrested a semi-nude man at the scene and charged him with burglary, a news release states.
When officers arrived, the resident told them that she was awakened by a man who had gained entry into her home and was trying to force his way into her son's bedroom. The victim told officers the man, later identified as 30-year-old Jarrett Bolton, of Calhoun, was standing in a hallway and was partially nude.
Bolton was taken into custody, transported to Gordon Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and subsequently taken to the Gordon County Jail.
He has been charged with burglary and remains in the Gordon County Jail, Lt. Tony Pyle said.
Missing airplane found; pilot dead
VONORE, Tenn. - Officials in East Tennessee say they have found wreckage from an aircraft that was reported missing and the pilot, who was the only person aboard, is dead.
The aircraft -- a single-engine World War II-era de Havilland DHC-1 -- was reported missing Sunday evening after it didn't arrive at the Franklin County Airport in Canon, Ga. The flight originated in French Lick, Ind.
Officials with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office told media the wreckage was found in the Cherokee National Forest in an area that is not easily accessible by vehicle. Crews were able to access the area by air.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane was found near Calderwood Lake and Calderwood Dam, less than five miles from the North Carolina line.
FAA officials said the pilot was using visual flight rules and was not receiving air traffic control service.
The vintage airplane went off radar around 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Blount County area, where the sheriff's office got a report later that night that a plane out of French Lick was missing. A search began at 9:30 p.m., and the last searcher left at 5 a.m.
A distress signal was located in the Indian Boundary area of Cherokee National Forest, and Blount County turned the search over to Monroe County, Blount Public Information Officer Marian O'Briant told the Maryville newspaper.
An investigation into the crash continues. Crews plan to try to extricate the pilot's body if weather allows.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, based in Maryland, states on its website that there are 350 of the planes still flying, 100 of them in the United States.
Deer meat given for needy families
ATLANTA - Georgia hunters have donated more than 12,000 pounds of deer meat for needy families, officials from the Georgia Wildlife Federation say.
The federation said the Georgia Hunters for the Hungry Program collected meat from more than 415 deer by the end of deer hunting season in January.
Officials say the meat is processed at state-inspected facilities before being ground into venison and delivered to local food banks.
More than 325,000 pounds of ground venison has been donated to food banks throughout the state since the Georgia Hunters for the Hungry program launched in 1993, according to the wildlife federation.
