Condos remain popular for downtown living

Condominiums continue to be a popular choice for people who want to live in the heart of downtown Chattanooga and are wary of the responsibilities associated with a large property and yard work.

The retired seek out smaller spaces after children leave the nest, and the environmentally conscious want options that allow them to walk or bike to their destinations. And downtown developers are benefiting.

Some choices for downtown living, like The Pinnacle Condominiums, are older but remain popular for their locations. The Pinnacle offers one- to three-bedroom condos on Stringers Ridge Road on the North Shore.

Newer locations such as Terrace at Frazier and One North Shore along the Tennessee River offer spectacular views and amenities that traditional neighborhoods wouldn't. Residents have an exercise facility, a pool and a seventh-floor clubhouse overlooking the city, said George Bright, owner of Fletcher Bright Co., which owns One North Shore.

The 203-unit development is the largest condo development in the city, he said. The eight different floor plans range in price from $169,000 to $395,000.

Terrace at Frazier offers higher-end condos, and some three-bedroom penthouse suites cost more than $1 million.

"You can walk to work. You can walk to the theater. You can walk to I don't know how many restaurants," Bright said. "There is going to be continued demand because there is so much to do downtown these days."

Signal View on Mountain Creek Road also sells condominiums at a lower price. Many of the condos are then rented out by the owners.
