Exceptionalism

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Granted the drop off from George Washington to BO is pretty stark, but we'll always be exceptional because it's not who's in charge that makes us exceptional, it's our Constitution and our love of freedom. Two things that just happen to annoy BO.

Politicians will take a stand and refer to the constitution when it fits their need to advance a piece of legislation but ignore it when their agenda is not consistent with it.

The federal government has grown so huge and complex no one truly understands all the working parts. The number of departments added by several presidents results in duplication, over lap and waste. Obama hasn't added a new department but certainly has expanded and exploited those in place.

Bush added the department of homeland security which duplicates or assumes duties formerly performed by other departments. He also added Medicare D without fully paying for it. Two major unfunded initiatives.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The working word is pursue with no guarantee of success. No reference to equal income, wealth redistribution or government supported entitlements.

Every new government initiative with a cost should include a tax increase to pay for it. People paying no taxes have the perception those benefits received are free.

The only fair tax is on what is spent not on income. That improves accountability and awareness of the tax burden and encourages good decision making by consumers.

Gauss, horse crap. Homosexuals can do what they want in this country, unlike in other countries. Soon they'll probably be able to marry in all states. Marriage is between a man and a woman in my opinion, but just like the liberal sacrifice of abortion, which we'll never be rid of, "gay marriage" will be here to stay. What the "gay movement" really wants, they'll never get, though, which is the label of normal. As long as they keep pushing it, like in the California public schools where they teach the idea that the anus is a genital, then they'll get the ridicule they deserve.

Overall, in this country, for the most part nobody gives a crap what anyone does in the privacy of their home.

While some of you celebrate the concept of exceptionalism, many, if not more, regret and reject any ideal that we, as Americans, are exceptional.

As we wind down the second protracted and expensive undeclared wars on terror, having made little, if any progress in trimming the numbers of people who would obliterate this nation, if given half a chance, I find nothing to celebrate nor be proud of.

Our national leaders have been allowed to use the men and the women of this nation to fight the battles they have created through their ideals of exceptionalism, while perpetuating and propping up those who depend on conflict to keep them in business.

Joe and Connie, you can take pot shots all day long, but it's notable that neither one of you can refute one sentence I have ever offered in this forum.

I've offered the proof to my statements.

Where is your proof to the contrary?

Jesus was a living, breathing, human being. There is Biblical proof that he was as human as the three of us were.

There is no Biblical proof that he was without sin, nor that he was God.

If there were, one of you would be able to post the scripture that proves it.

It's just that simple.

I'm not asking anyone to change what they believe. Every belief is an individual choice to make.

But that does not translate into anyone having a right to declare me a non-Christian, based on a belief that is not supported with factual and written evidence, in the Bible.

You've been TAUGHT to believe those things. They are not Biblically supported. So if one presents the Bible as the "word of God," then one must consider EVERY word contained within, or none of it.

All I have ever done, is post that which can be read in one's own personal copy of that we know as the Bible.

I have welcomed many times, and challenged anyone to disprove my statements.

They all still stand as truths, like them or not.

I'm very serious about what I am about to type.

If anything, our discussions are about to convince me that Christianity is based on most of what cannot be found in the Bible.

I truly was unaware that the word "Christian" only appeared in the Bible three times, until I look it up the other day.

I've all but given up hope that he and I will ever have a productive discussion. I know...I should have given up a year ago, but he seems so eager to convince me that I am wrong, but he doesn't know how to do it.

And you know what? I want to be wrong. I want to have my statements disproven.

I do apologize for the off-subject posts, and I would like to resolve the issue one day, but I'm sorry, the jerk is not going to get the last word in by calling me a heathen for typing the truth.

You forget yourself. How many of those 55 million who were aborted, would most likely wind up being supported by the taxpayers, had they been born?

You bitch and whine about government support, then drop a turd like that.

What may seem normal to you, is not normal for everyone else. Even among heterosexuals, there are differences in what they find attractive. Butts, boobs, legs, hair color, eyes, are all turn-offs and turn-ons, depending on who you are.

No two people are just alike, in all respects. So what is normal for you, is not normal for another human being on this planet.

Oh...and in case you didn't know it, heterosexuals have anal sex too. Some men even have their ladies strap on a dildo and allow themselves to be violated, just to see what it's like.

Geez, conservative really seems hung up on religion lately, carrying it over from several toons. Strange how a book that many claim to be self evident has spawned so many different interpretations. Does not seem to support conservative's claim that their is no contradictions in the Bible.

Thank goodness I have escaped the bondage of religious beliefs. I refuse to prostate myself to a deity that has endorsed rape, murder, and enslavement of my fellow man. I reject a doctrine that because a person does not subscribe to a certain belief, he will be tortured for eternity. I do not need the dogma of religion to show me the benefits of tolerance and treating my fellow man as I would wish to be treated. I will continue to support reason and logic in my life, and reject the belief that life's answers can all be found in a book written by bronze age nomads. I will fight all attempts to move us to a theistic government under the guise that America is a "Christian Nation". I will continue to support the separation of Church and State by understanding the history of what befalls a nation who would persecute others who fail to follow their orthodoxy. I do not need superstition to live a full and fruitful life.

Don't get out much, do ya? You really should travel outside this country a bit more. You will find that all of the Western European countries and many others enjoy a level of freedom every bit as much as we have here. Of course, if you want to have the freedom to carry a gun and likewise become a statistic as a gun fatality, then this is your place. Or if you want to enjoy the freedom of the likelihood of being imprisoned, then this is also the place to be, since we have the highest incarceration rate of any "free" country. Indeed, America is "exceptional" - exceptionally greedy, exceptionally gridlocked (unable to act in unison to take any significant steps forward), and exceptionally violent. How about trying to be relevant for a change, PT? Who is even talking about late term abortion? But since you mention it...there are already laws in place that restrict a woman's range of choice to what trimester the pregnant woman is in. The fact is that there are very few women who even attempt to get a late-term abortion for reasons other than something seriously wrong with the fetus or seriously wrong with their pregnancy in general. And if that is the case then any woman SHOULD have the right to terminate that pregnancy if her health and/or life are in danger. But there are plenty of anti-abortionists who want to restrict even that right to women and give the fetus more rights than the woman carrying it.

One more point Connie and I'll let you get back to your repetitive posting.

Most of what the Catholic Church does and teaches is not Biblically supported. The rest, they misinterpret as the need arises.

Never mind that I and every other liberal I know have worked at least as hard as he and his conservative cronies have all our lives and that there are at least as many conservative freeloaders on welfare and food stamps as there are liberals. The only difference between those libs and conservatives is that the libs appreciate those programs while the redneck conservatives bite the hand that feeds them, as they whine about how evil Obama and the government is. But they're not about to refuse their food stamps or welfare checks or their Medicare/Medicaid and their Social Security ("Keep your government hands off my Medicare!") They're too stupid to even know the source of their sustenance. They cuss Obama and "big gubmint" and continue to vote against their own best interests.

They're also too stupid to realize that the Republican Party's idea of job creation and reducing poverty and making education and health insurance affordable is to do...NOTHING! And that is the individual liberty that they are talking about - the "freedom" for the individual born into poverty, or relegated to it through circumstance, to sink or swim in a sea of sharks, while the GOP puts more sharks in the water around them. They don't have the common sense to see that what's good for corporate America and Wall Street is not necessarily good for Main Street. In fact, more often than not, what's good for corporate America is in direct opposition to what is good for the rest of us. Unrestricted freedom for big business does not translate into freedom for the individual. In fact, it's usually at the EXPENSE of the individual.

I've read the Constitution many times, and nowhere in it, is wording that provides a right to be a bum and a leach.

Seems to me that a few of you are not consistent when it comes to the issue of people providing for themselves. You moan and groan about that which is spent for welfare and other public assistance.

For decades, taxpayers have augmented medical providers services provided to those who did not have health care coverage.

Barack Obama is attempting to reform a system that forces people to be self-responsible for a cost that each and every person in this nation SHOULD take care of themselves.

One way or the other, everyone in this nation is going to pay SOMETHING towards the cost of their healthcare.

The problem with exceptionalism is that it demands a conceited view that we are greater and better than everyone else and some how deserving of special treatment epitomized by the slogan, "God is on our side." A very interesting submission yesterday Mr. Bennett.

I submit, American exceptionalism is an really just an expression of pride and patriotism. And that’s fine – for here – in North America.

But the idea of exceptionalism oft times extends beyond just domestic patriotic gestures, and this is where the concept becomes fuzzy, problematic and hugely controversial.

The idea of American exceptionalism is more often than not dishonestly invoked in foreign policy and used as a way of convincing the American people that ‘WE’ have some moral obligation to bring democracy, liberty, and justice to the everyone everywhere. We don’t! During the Cold War, it was used as a never ending basis as the premise which the US justified military and covert interventions into countries perceived to be in danger of turning communist.

So – in theory, the notion of pursuing justice in the world is a noble effort. Most recently, President Obama invoked this very interpretation of American exceptionalism in a speech about Syria and more recently the Ukraine. His general argument was that what made America ‘exceptional’ was its willingness to step in and bring about moral good when most of the world was inclined to turn a blind eye.

HOWEVER - As practiced, foreign interventions have been dangerously prone to abuse, unanticipated and astonishing missteps.

Under the 'Dick and his boy George' administration, American exceptionalism was manipulated into making the case that America was an ’exception’ to international (and domestic) laws as well as standards of decency. American history is replete with examples of the United States engaging in foreign interventions justified, at least in part, by distortions of American exceptionalism. The most recent, prominent cases are the tragedies of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Thus it is of the utmost importance for us to be able to distinguish between the two distinct (and dangerously compatible) interpretations of such exceptionalism. On the one hand, it is laudable to have a pride and patriotism in the history, philosophy, and values of our home. I do! On the other hand, we should be careful to tread the line between pride, vanity and hubris; patriotism and imperialism. The latter is in full play and exposed fo what it is - in this, the 21st century.

If we can continue to distinguish between the two distinct interpretations, maybe in the not too distant future we can agree with Obamas assertion; ”That’s what makes America different. That’s what makes America exceptional.”

Zableedofisterix,

"Liberalism/Progressivism over the last 100 years has done everything it can to damage us and spoil everything." That is ABSOLUTE BULLSH!T.

"Yet, we still are the best thing in the world." That is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.

YES, no freedom of choice.

Setting aside the notion that you are defending one's right to be financially irresponsible, I invite each and every one of you Tennesseans to drop your automobile insurance on your vehicle, drive it into Georgia, commit a traffic violation, and then you're REALLY going to howl about losing your freedom, because you will be arrested and your motor vehicle will be impounded.

This state issue which healthcare should be is an apples oranges comparison. Failure to have auto insurance that protects the other person is a fine in Ga. and TN. No requirement to insure you own vehicle or your own well being.

One way or the other, everyone in this nation is going to pay SOMETHING towards the cost of their healthcare.

Isn't that, by definition, a fair tax?

Not he way it is being administered. The percent getting free healthcare coverage or a subsidy is very high and a disincentive to increase income. It is of no value to those paying more or a tax.

The AHA is a wealth redistribution and welfare program just as other entitlements. People clamor about they paid in social security and having a right to draw it out. What about cutting it off once the amount paid in plus interest is withdrawn? Social security is a Ponzi scheme that only works as long as the number working and paying in is adequate to meet expenses. In other words you must have added investment to pay those that you have already sold shares to. Both programs (SS & AHA) have to have the young and healthy plus the successful participating. Once again several boomers riding on the shoulders of the younger generation.

You want to assure most people obtain healthcare insurance? Repeal the law that requires healthcare providers to provide care to the uninsured.

AHA is here and if the republicans gained the WH and congress it will still be here, their noise is only that, they don't have the guts to close the gate.

You tried to give me a lesson in cannon scholarship. You even made the false accusation that I claimed to be a Bible Scholar - "If you are going to put yourself forward as a Biblical scholar."

You seem to have misunderstood me when I wrote that Revelation closed the cannon of Scripture. Now, I meant that the Bibles I have and I have many, have the Book of Revelation last because that is where the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, moved man to place it. God intended it to be placed last long before man figured it out. The Book of Revelation is God's last word to mankind until Jesus the second person of the Trinity comes back to establish His Kingdom here on earth.

BTW, the Book of Mormon is a lie from the pits of Hell!

Now, I did look to find out which book of the Bible was written last. It has been quite awhile since I have done any research on how God moved men to place the books of the Bible in the order that He wanted. And I readily admit I have not spent a lot of time on the subject. The truths contained in them are vastly more important to me than what man thinks.

Hold on! I found that the Book of Revelation was written last!

Maybe it was just stuck back in my memory and I retrieved it.

If you saw someone stealing your neighbors TV would you yell thief?

If he told you that you were judging him, would you buy it?

Would you think you would be wrong and judgmental?

Why not?

Really? And you've been arguing all this crap about Sunday Sabbath's...WHY? " I don't observe a Sunday Sabbath. The Sabbath is a Saturday. Sunday is another day, the first day of the week in Scripture."

Do you really believe that anyone who has been reading our exchange is now suddenly going to believe that you have not been defending a Sunday Sabbath?

================================

I went back to see some more of your lies and found the gem above. You wrote that I had been arguing about "Sunday Sabbaths."

Not once did I argue for a "Sunday Sabbath." That is your invention, your lie. I wrote several times that Saturday was the Sabbath. Not once did I call Sunday the Sabbath. There is no Sunday Sabbath in the Bible.

You lied!

You can not paste any statement by me where I believe the Sabbath to be Sunday. I always called Saturday the Sabbath.

You lied again.

Now notice, now notice, Mr. Anthony Provancher, where you quoted me " I don't observe a Sunday Sabbath. The Sabbath is a Saturday. Sunday is another day, the first day of the week in Scripture."

You are one brazen liar!

How? By attending college, being a practicing Attorney, being a best selling author, being elected Senator and finally being elected President Of the United States, not once, but twice?

I'm sure the man has accomplished much more than you have, or ever will. You're like a mouse talking down to an elephant. You couldn't be a pimple on his ass, but you sit there behind a computer monitor and think that anything you type means a damn thing?

What's that you like to type? Bwahhahahahaha!

"As do you."

I owe you no explanation, but I am disabled and have the medical records to back it up. No games. No lies. It took $200,000 worth of medical treatment to get me where I am today. I'm not whole, but I am still very much alive.

If you have any personal doubts about my status, you know EXACTLY where to find me, and I invite you to come take a look see at my records, which are detailed, categorized, and totaled.

I own nothing any longer. Nothing. My vehicles? Gone. Everything of value? Gone. I sold everything to settle my medical bills. I close on my real estate Wednesday, for two reasons. It was paid for and I am no longer able to do the upkeep on the outside of the house. After settling my medical bills, I'll have quite a nest egg to tide me over for the rest of my life.

I am signing a lease for a duplex I have rented Thursday.

So you see Sir, although I am permanently disabled and will be receiving Medicare shortly, I will not be seeking freebies. No SSI, no subsidized rent. No food stamps.

You can sit there behind your computer monitor all day long and pretend you're a big man, rich as the hills and socially solvent, but the fact is you're nothing but a joke, a loser, and you and I both know it.

Barack Obama will forever and a day be a hundred times the man you will ever be.

And you know what else? I'm a better man than you too.

"You want to "instruct" me? Then get busy digging up the Biblical proof that Christians are exempt from adhering to the Ten Commandments that you claim only apply to ancient Jews."

I am calling you out on that lie.

You constantly lie!

You are an inveterate liar!

I have made no such claim. You lied!

You can't paste any statement by me making such a claim. You lied!

And speaking of American Exceptionalism, I congratulate the exceptional people who have made it possible that so far, almost 7 million people have signed up for the Affordable Care Act. As for the people who have made it their agenda to block millions of uninsured Americans from obtaining insurance and affordable health care...suck it.

Fister, Reagan was a moderate Republican, you'd guys would be crucifying him today if he held some political office; not reminiscing and praising as if he was Lord Conservatism.
