Police: Man dead after shooting at Georgia university

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The police chief at Columbus State University says an armed man who fired on police during a foot chase near student housing was fatally wounded by officers who returned fire.

Police Chief Rus Drew told The Associated Press that officers were called at 2:35 p.m. Sunday to an area near some student apartments and pursued a man who turned on them and fired shots before he was fatally wounded. Drew says the man was not a student at the university but he had no further information on his identity or his injuries.

Drew says no school lockdown was ordered because police determined the suspect was an "isolated threat" and all danger had been removed. He says some students were witnesses but it appeared no students were ever in danger.
