The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team got its weekend Southern Conference series at UNC Greensboro off to a good start, but a busy Sunday awaits the Lady Mocs.

Rain halted the first game of the three-game series Saturday after six innings with UTC leading 8-1. That game will be completed today along with the final two games. Play is scheduled to resume at 1 p.m.

UTC loaded the bases in the second inning and pushed two runs across on an infield single by Sarah Beth Roberts and a fielder's choice by Alyssa Taylor.

After the Spartans scored a run in the fourth inning, UTC broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Jesslyn Stockard hit a three-run home run to push the lead to 6-1. After Stephanie Rieck reached on an error, fellow senior Katie Dutton hit her second career home run for the final margin before the rain halted play.

Dutton, Roberts and Sam Taylor each have two hits through six innings of the unfinished game.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Henderson started and didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, and she is in position to pick up the win after pitching 4 1/3 innings and striking out five. Taylor Deason came on in relief and pitched 1 2/3 innings with no hits or walks.
