Just love like Jesus

For those of you who are so sure you understand the Bible and know what it says, I hope you can understand this scripture from James as well. "Don't bad-mouth each other, friends. It's God's word, his message, his royal rule, that takes a beating in that kind of talk. You're supposed to be honoring the message, not writing graffiti all over it. God is in charge of deciding human destiny. Who do you think you are to meddle in the destiny of others?" (James 4: 11-12). When you are so sure homosexuality is wrong, you are telling God he made a mistake. Could it be possible we don't even understand why this kind of sexuality might be needed? However, God does, as he made them. Do we know the mind of God? Do we want to be pointing out rules like the Pharisees did? Or do we want to love like Jesus did? I especially urge organizations and businesses to heed the scripture above. Let's make this song true: "They'll know we are Christians by our love."

Corker quote clarified

I believe U.S. Sen. Bob Corker is being misquoted in the Times Free Press and other publications regarding his statement in reference to the recent Volkswagen UAW vote. The senator did not say the Chattanooga plant would be selected to produce the new VW SUV if the workers rejected UAW representation. Rather, he stated (and subsequently has further clarified) the Chattanooga plant would still be selected for the new product even if union representation was rejected by the workers. His statement was intended to counteract inferences from pro-union parties that selection of the Chattanooga plant for the new SUV was contingent on a favorable vote for the UAW.

Don't blame labor unions

In response to "no unions, period," which blames unions for schools' low ratings and the Postal Service for not being profitable. The Postal Service has struggled, but held on; then Congress passed the Postal Service Accountability and Enhancement Act that forces it to pre-fund its retirees' health benefits for 75 years, in 10 years. Forced to fund people who are not working for them yet, in some cases, not even born, no business could survive like that. That's why they are in a financial crisis! Blaming teachers' unions for school low ratings? Even with a union, teachers are still paid low pay, buy supplies out of their own pockets and work endless hours without pay. The list goes on and on. Budget cuts, restrictions put on our educators and people with no educational background trying to dictate how to teach, are why our schools are failing! Union or not, you owe unions; without them, there would not be an eight-hour work day, 40-hour week, overtime pay, child labor laws, unemployment insurance, workplace safety standards. The list goes on and on. Time to thank the unions instead of blaming them for all the work-place failures!

Support for Blythe Bailey

As opposed to Councilman Yusuf Hakeem's view of Transportation Department leader Blythe Bailey, I have found Mr. Bailey to be highly responsive and an asset to the city and its citizens. I recently required a special-use permit in order to install a sculpture on the sidewalk in front of my building. When first inquiring about the process, I left a telephone message for Mr. Bailey on a Friday. He returned my call the next day, a Saturday, with the answers I needed. I urge Mr. Hakeem to leave Blythe Bailey alone to do his job.
