Double league champion Sewanee dominated the Southern Athletic Association postseason tennis honors. Conchie and John Shackelford both were voted SAA coaches of the year, and the Tigers' Bronte Goodhue from Girls Preparatory School and Avery Schober were the women's and men's players of the year. Schober also was the men's newcomer of the year after going 17-3 in singles and 12-4 in doubles for the 14-6 Tigers, and teammates Eric Roddy (14-3) from Baylor School and Connor Winkler were second-team All-SAA selections. While Conchie Shackelford repeated as women's coach of the year, Goodhue repeated the top-player honor after going 19-2 in singles and 19-2 in doubles with Lindsey Liles, who with Annie Veron joined Goodhue on the all-conference first game. Liles was 19-0 in singles; Veron was 18-3 in singles and 17-4 in doubles.
• Chattanooga's Wes Cash and doubles partner Mark Vines of Lynchburg, the No. 2 seeds, won 6-3, 6-3 over South Africa's Duard Botha and Piet van Blerk on Wednesday in the men's 55 division of the International Tennis Federation Seniors World Championships individual tournament in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. That puts them in the round of 16. Another Chattanoogan, Sue Webb -- officially representing her native Great Britain -- is in the women's 50s doubles tournament with American Fran Chandler.
• GPS held a gathering Tuesday morning to celebratre Virginia Hammond's acceptance to play NCAA Division III tennis at Birmingham-Southern College. "What is neat about Virginia is that this is her first year in our top six," GPS coach Sue Bartlett said. "She didn't play a lot as a young child and has worked hard throughout middle school and high school and now is finally playing where it counts. So she really is a late bloomer. She was accepted [as a student] at some big schools but really wanted to play, and she loved Birmingham-Southern, so it was a great fit."
Baseball
• Justin Byrd was 3-for-5 with two home runs and eight RBIs as Cumberland University beat visiting Bryan College 12-7 in NAIA baseball Wednesday at Lebanon, Tenn. Crandon Wallace and Kevin Roberts each was 3-for-5, Wallace with two RBIs, for Bryan (29-25) which got two hits apiece from Cody Rhinehart and Tyler Latham, two RBIs from Rhinehart and two runs each from Roberts, Latham and Preston King. Bryan outhit the Bulldogs 14-10 and led 6-0 before Cumberland (36-17) scored six runs in the third inning and five in the fourth. The Lions next will play Monday in the AAC tournament.
Softball
• The Lighthouse Lookouts/Athletic Shop 50-plus men's slowpitch softball team from Chattanooga moved up from AAA to major this year and finished third out of seven teams in its first tournament in the new division this past weekend in Cartersville, Ga. -- the SPA Mid-South Invitational. The team managed by Rex Elmore, assisted by Bud Pressley, had 10 players bat .600 or better in going 3-3 in the tournament won by Monster of Softball of Memphis, which edged Lighthouse 19-16 before downing Doc C's of Pensacola, Fla., for the title. The Chattanoogans earlier beat a major-plus team 22-21 with a 10-run, no-out final inning and Langston Painting of Birmingham 28-27 with a nine-run final at-bat. Southern Elite from Atlanta also lost to Lighthouse, which had Art Pendergrass hit .826 with six home runs, Mike Wood .762 with seven, Frank Markley .750 with three, Rodney Waters .739 with five, Bobby Adams .700 and Van Shumaker, Kevin Highsmith and Mark Talley each .667 with a combined eight homers. Steve Moffett batted .650 and Jim Wright came out of retirement to pitch four games Saturday and bat .600 with the winning hit against Langston. Bo Walker pitched the two Sunday games, and Tony Bartley, Al Cox, Jeff Jones and Scottey Lewis also contributed.
