Hamilton County residents warned of fake IRS representative scam

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office is warning people of a scam that recently left a local man as the victim of fraud.

A person identifying himself as Officer Eric Foster with the Internal Revenue Service advised the victim he owed back taxes and would be subject to legal action if he did not pay what he owed.

To cooperate with what he was told, the victim purchased prepaid cards of various amounts from a Bi-Lo store and transferred them as he was advised.

After the transfer, the victim contacted IRS and they informed the victim that they do not do business in that fashion. The victim found the cards had no balance when he checked them.

Anyone contacted by someone who identifies themselves as representing the IRS who asks for money by pre-paid cards should notify law enforcement.
