Boyd-Buchanan girls' tennis team sends all six to semifinals

The Boyd-Buchanan girls' tennis team has shown throughout the 2014 season that it was the class of District 5-A/AA. Thursday afternoon, the Lady Buccaneers showed that they were pretty tough as individuals as well.

All six Lady Bucs reached the semifinals of the district individual tournament at Lee University. The semifinals begin this morning at 9. Finalists earn a spot in the Region 3-A/AA tournament next week.

Makenna Thomas and Katie Delay are in the semifinals in singles, while the combinations of Paige Zumbrun with Christina Amos and Shelby Brown with Libby Reynolds are still fighting in doubles.

On the boys' side, Grace's Blake Savard and Colt Drennon are among the semifinalists in singles, along with Boyd-Buchanan's Joseph Fairchild and Arts & Sciences' Visaal Sivakumar. Savard was a 2013 Class A/AA state quarterfinalist.

Collegedale Academy has a pair of boys' doubles teams remaining: Spencer Pflug with Ivan Snyder and Herbie Klischies with Brent Chung, who upset the No. 2 seed on their way to the semis.

n Like the Lady Bucs, the Hixson girls advanced all six of their players to the District 6-A/AA tournament semifinals at the Brainerd courts Thurday.

Michelle Phillips and Haylee Gossett are in the singles semis, while Emily Davis with Corynne Schannuth and Maggie Ozborn with Caylee Schannuth are still in the doubles draw. The latter duo will face Brainerd twins Brianna and Brittney Canty when play begins at 2 p.m. today.

The Red Bank boys also sent all six of their players to the semifinals Thursday, as Cody Baugh and Josh Reed combined for four wins in singles, while Gary Paradis with Austin Camp and Cody Schmidt with Daniel Cox are still playing in doubles.
