Melton Hill demonstration project saves energy

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. — A Tennessee Valley Authority demonstration project at the Melton Hill Dam Sustainable Recreation Area has reduced energy use by about 30 percent and water consumption by more than 50 percent.

According to the utility, the project at the 92-acre lakeside recreation area west of Knoxville opened on Earth Day 2011.

The enhancements include a solar installation, a wind turbine, energy-efficient lighting, solar water heating, dual-flush toilets, electric vehicle chargers and buffers with native grasses to filter storm water runoff.

The water and energy conservation estimates were announced on Thursday from monitoring by TVA and the Electric Power Research Institute.
