Pitchfork used in diner robbery
NORCROSS, Ga. - Police are searching for a man who used a pitchfork to rob a Waffle House restaurant northeast of Atlanta.
Norcross police said 50-year-old Jeffery Wooten entered the diner in Norcross and forced people toward a backroom. He then grabbed the cash register.
WSB-TV reported that the suspect dropped the pitchfork while carrying that cash register back to his truck.
Two restaurant workers followed the robber outside, grabbed the abandoned pitchfork and used it to smash a window on the robber's truck as he escaped, possibly injuring the suspect.
Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers said investigators have secured a warrant charging Wooten with armed robbery.
He had not been caught as of Friday evening.
Archbishop restricts guns in churches
ATLANTA - Roman Catholics will not be allowed to carry guns in church with a few exceptions.
Archbishop Wilton Gregory opposed a new law spearheaded by Georgia Republicans that will allow people to carry guns in churches if the congregation permits it. Right now, carrying a firearm in a house of worship is illegal.
Gov. Nathan Deal signed the bill into law in a recent ceremony in Ellijay, Ga.
Gregory wrote in a newspaper column that he will generally ban weapons at Catholic institutions. He said exceptions will be made for people who are authorized members of the military, law enforcement officials or otherwise designated by the government to guard the public.
The archbishop said the new legislation makes guns more available and could allow violence to escalate.
2 shot at FedEx still hospitalized
MARIETTA, Ga. - Two people who suffered gunshot wounds during a shooting at a FedEx facility near Atlanta remain hospitalized.
A spokesman for WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center said a 28-year-old man, who has been identified as Christopher Sparkman, remained in serious condition Friday after undergoing several surgeries. A 52-year-old woman remained in stable condition.
A 22-year-old man was released from the hospital Thursday evening.
Three other people who suffered gunshot wounds when 19-year-old Geddy Kramer fired on co-workers at the FedEx sorting center in Kennesaw early Tuesday morning had already been released from the hospital. Police say Kramer fatally shot himself after shooting some of his co-workers with a shotgun.
Sparkman, a security guard at the FedEx facility, was the first person shot and suffered the most serious injuries.
Ticket wins $380,000 jackpot
DUNLAP, Tenn. - A ticket purchased in Dunlap won Wednesday night's Tennessee Cash drawing jackpot of $380,000, according to a news release from the Tennessee Education Lottery.
No more information is available until the winner claims the prize.
