Hiring starts for Roper jobs

The Georgia Department of Labor is recruiting workers to help GE's Roper Corp. fill 80 manufacturing jobs at its facility in LaFayette, Ga.

The appliance maker is adding a production line to assemble kitchen ranges on 8-hour shifts Monday through Friday. While the jobs are temporary, Roper said they may lead to full-time positions with the company.

Applicants must be 18 years or older, pass a drug screen and complete a company application at the LaFayette Career Center, 200 W. Villanow St.

Tennessee ranks low on taxes

Among states that levy income taxes, Tennessee collects the least per person with an average $30 a year, primarily from the Hall income tax on dividend income, according to the Tax Foundation.

Six states impose no tax at all on income. Tennessee, which does not tax wage income, ranks seventh lowest among the states for per capita income taxes. Georgia, which does have an individual income tax on wages, ranked 30th among the states with a per capita average income tax burden of $784 per year.

The Tax Foundation said, on average, state and local governments collect $918 per person from individual income taxes. New York collects the highest, coming in at $2,289 per person.
