BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham police have identified the officer who was fatally shot in the parking lot of a convenience store.

Lt. Sean Edwards on Sunday identified the slain officer as Keary Hollis, who worked in the department's West Precinct.

Officials have said Hollis was off duty when he was leaving a convenience store Saturday night in the city's Ensley neighborhood and got into an argument with another man that escalated to gunfire.

Authorities have said a person of interest has been taken into custody, but it's unclear if formal charges have been filed.

The identity of the person of interest has not been released. Edwards says Hollis was a 5 ½ year department veteran.
