A woman that neighbors recognized as the mother of young children was killed Tuesday morning at College Hill Courts just west of downtown Chattanooga.

Keiara Patton, 20, died at a hospital after police say she was shot in her apartment by 20-year-old Taylor Satterfield at about 9:35 a.m. Patton was listed in critical condition during the first hours after the shooting.

Satterfield is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a firearm and tampering with evidence. He is at the Hamilton County Jail on a $300,000 bond.

He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

Court records show that Satterfield was charged with selling drugs, illegal possession of a firearm and vandalism in 2013.

Tuesday's shooting is at least the city's 42nd of the year, according to Times Free Press records and media reports.

Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired just after 9:30 a.m. Officers found Patton inside apartment 804 suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

By 9:50, several patrol cars covered the streets around the neighborhood that is at least partially public housing operated by the Chattanooga Housing Authority.

Officers placed crime tape around the entrance to the Newton Child Development Center day care across the street from the apartment complex and roped off Grove Street between Boynton Drive and Riverfront Parkway.

Authorities initially declined to give out any suspect information but had Satterfield in custody by midafternoon.
