Dunlap resident James Stockwell, 24, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon after a shooting Wednesday evening in Sequatchie County, Tenn.

A Sequatchie County, Tenn., man underwent surgery on Thursday for multiple gunshot wounds to his legs, and another man remains behind bars today on attempted murder charges.

Sheriff Ronnie Hitchcock said James Stockwell, 24, of Dunlap, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Shooting victim Chris Sims, 28, also of Dunlap, was treated and underwent surgery at Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga, Hitchcock said late Thursday.

The shooting happened at Sims' home off of Bostontown Road, north of Dunlap.

Hitchcock said Stockwell sprayed gunfire at Sims, striking him multiple times in the legs and leaving his mobile home full of holes.

Authorities suspect the weapon is fully automatic, but they have sent the .45-caliber "Uzi" for testing to make sure before leveling any charges against Stockwell for possession of an illegal weapon, Hitchcock said.

Sims was at home when Stockwell came over, the two men got into an argument over money and the battle of words escalated into gunfire, the sheriff said.

Stockwell faces a bond hearing today and no lawyer is on record yet as representing him, according to officials.

District Attorney General Mike Taylor said if the weapon identified as an "Uzi" turns out to an automatic weapon, federal authorities could become involved in the case.
