Fourth-seeded Chattanooga State is 2-0 with a 21-5 run differential in the NJCAA Division I softball tournament in St. George, Utah, after defeating 12th seed North Central Texas 11-4 on Thursday. Izzy McCurry was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, Khadija Neely and Courtney Crawford were 3-for-4 and 2-for-4 with an RBI apiece, Dana Horgan was 2-for-3 and Sharlene Godoy and Shelby Willard did the pitching for the Lady Tigers (53-6). They play eighth seed Central Florida, which beat top-seeded Arizona Western 6-0, at 4:30 EDT today.
• Carson-Newman University senior third baseman Sara Kelley from Ooltewah High School was announced this week as second-team all-region both by Daktronics and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Teammate Kelli Hensley, the South Atlantic Conference player of the year, was a first-team selection in both listings, as was Armstrong Atlantic State's Lacye Walker from Grace Academy and Chattanooga State. Walker leads the Peach Belt Conference with a .448 average and 53 RBIs and also has 14 home runs. Kelley was second in the SAC with 60 RBIs this season and first with 19 doubles, and she added 12 homers in setting Lady Eagles career records of 35 homers and 55 doubles.
Baseball
• Shortstop Josh Silver homered among three hits and batted in four runs as Lee University romped past Lancaster (Pa.) Bible College, 10-0, in its second game of the National Christian College Athletic Association baseball tournament Thursday in Mason, Ohio. Lee (34-18), which ended a 10-game win streak with an opening loss, completes pool play today with games against Trevecca Nazarene and Cedarville. Derrick Pitts also was 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Flames, and Zacary Hawkins was 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Siosi Poti was 2-for-5 with two runs. Ryan Zimmer allowed one hit in his seven innings pitched, and Lancaster Bible (17-19) got another hit in the eighth off C.J. Lusted. Silver's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth ended the game.
• In a game delayed from noon until Thursday night, Rhodes College scored five runs with one hit in the bottom of the eighth inning -- four of them unearned -- and beat Covenant College 5-3 in the NCAA Division III South Regional baseball tournament at Demorest, Ga. That ended Covenant's season at 26-15 and left the Lynx at 33-16 going into today's play. The Scots outhit Rhodes 10-4 with Scott Gillespie, Perry Rigby and David Lockwood each going 2-for-4 and K.C. Simons, Chris Rollins and Z Arima batting in the Covenant runs. Alhanon Miller pitched into the eighth with six strikeouts, five walks and a hit batter to go with the four hits. The first three Lynx runs were credited to him, but only one was earned.
Tennis
• Sewanee No. 1 player Bronte Goodhue from Girls Preparatory School was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship winner for the NCAA Division III Atlantic South Region, and Sewanee's Conchie Shackelford was the region's coach of the year after directing the Tigers to a 21-4 record and an NCAA tournament victory. Goodhue, who will be playing singles and doubles in the national individual tournament next week, also was the Atlantic South "player to watch."
Golf
• Sewanee's Emily Javadi from Chattanooga made progress again Thursday in the NCAA Division III women's golf tournament at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., but the third round was suspended about halfway through. She's tied for fourth.
• Cleveland residents Linda Mullins and Lisa Daubner finished first and second in the top flight of the Rosebud women's golf tournament Thursday at Valleybrook. Carlene Ryon was third.
Football
• Former University of Tennessee star Justin Hunter and fellow Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kendall Wright are scheduled to be part of the Titans Caravan stop today at 3:30 p.m. at the Academy Sports + Outdoors store on Hamilton Place Boulevard. "Voice of the Titans" Mike Keith also will be present. Posters will be provided free for autographs, and photos are encouraged. The appearance will last about an hour. Wright's 94 catches in 2013 ranked seventh in the NFL, and his 1,079 receiving yards were the team's most in a decade.
