UAB ends UTC's softball season; Lady Vols beat Virginia Tech

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball Lady Mocs came further than perhaps they could have been expected this season, but it all came to an end Saturday with a 9-2 loss to Alabama-Birmingham in the Athens (Ga.) Regional of the NCAA tournament.

The Lady Mocs (34-21) gave up one run in the first inning but kept the game close until the bottom of the fourth, when UAB scored six runs on four hits. The big blows were a three-run home run by Amy Dennis and a two-run double by Jojo Fallen.

UTC rallied for a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning. Senior designated player Stephanie Rieck scored on a double by Sarah Beth Robers, followed by a single by Alyssa Taylor to score Roberts.

The Blazers added two runs in the sixth to seal the win.

Freshman first baseman Jesslyn Stockard went 2-f0r-3 on a day when the Lady Mocs were outhit 13-9.

Lady Vols romp

The Tennessee softball team easily beat Virginia Tech 12-0 in five innings on Saturday in the second day of the Knoxville Regional.

The Lady Vols scored two in the first inning, four in the second and six in the third to put the game away early and advance to today's championship game.

Megan Geer, Madison Shipman and Annie Aldrete hit home runs for UT, and Geer, Aldrete and Lexi Overstreet each knocked in three runs.

Tennessee ace Ellen Renfroe picked up the pitching win, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four.

Nunley, UK nip JMU

For a second consecutive game, former Soddy-Daisy star Kelsey Nunley won a pitching duel for Kentucky at the Lexington Regional.

UK rallied with two runs in the sixth inning to beat James Madison 2-1 and advance to the champioship game.

JMU's Caitlin Sandy hit a second-inning home run off Nunley, but UK held on from there until Sulver Samuel and Nikki Sagermann gave the Wildcats the lead with RBI hits. Nunley struck out 11 batters in the win while giving up five hits.
