CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Bradley County first responders were honored with the 2014 EMS Star of Life Award for their work to save an injured child last year.
Bradley EMS spokesman Stan Clark said in a news release this is the fifth time Bradley has brought home the trophy since the award was created six years ago by the Tennessee Emergency Medical Services for Children in Nashville.
He said the crash on April 10, 2013, happened when the 11-year-old raced his bike down a hill and into the road, crashing into the side of a minivan. The boy suffered a critical head injury but has made a "miraculous recovery" after extensive rehab, Clark said in the release.
In addition to the EMS crew, Bradley County Fire and Rescue, Bradley County 911 and Erlanger Life Force were all presented with Star of Life pins and certificates for their part in the emergency response.
BAXTER, Tenn. - Authorities say a man fatally shot his son during a dispute at their home in the Southern Hills golf course community in Putnam County.
According to WTVF-TV, authorities have not released names or details about the dispute. They also have not said whether the father will be charged.
Golf club ranger Terry Griffin told the television station that the son helped maintain the grounds at the golf course.
"I just can't believe he's gone," he said. "We're going to miss him."
ANNISTON, Ala. - Calhoun County officials say they're planning to use a three-year, $250,000 grant to address elder abuse.
Sheriff Larry Amerson told the Anniston Star the grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Violence against Women will be used to train law enforcement officials to help identify and prevent elder abuse.
A local domestic violence victim's advocacy group, 2nd Chance Inc., is the grant recipient and is organizing the training.
Piedmont police Sgt. Carolyn Durham said the training sessions will help county law enforcement agencies improve the way they communicate with each other to address the issue.
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Nearly a dozen people were hospitalized after a deck collapsed during a party in suburban Atlanta on Saturday.
Witnesses have said a grill that was on the deck when it collapsed slid and also burned several people.
DeKalb County fire Capt. Eric Jackson told WGCL-TV subpar construction could have led to the collapse.
ADAMS, Tenn. - Authorities in Robertson County are continuing to search for a man who fell out of his canoe into the Red River.
According to WSMV-TV, Charles Gourley was with his girlfriend, Lacy Henson, when the incident happened Saturday. Henson told police she put on her life jacket and tried to save him, but couldn't.
Authorities said Gourley wasn't wearing a life jacket.
